Mason is an actual candidate. If he’s the choice we should hear something soon.

Aiight, let’s get it.

Actually on paper he's the best hire we've ever made and it's not close. Certainly the most accomplished hire. The sitting 2-time Pac-12 champion, Rose Bowl winning 2x P12 COY who won 12 games in a season 24 months after taking over a bad team?

No coach we ever hired had that resume coming in.
A strong point from an HC Super Mario perpsective for sure.

Schnelly brought nattys from Bama as asst and obviously his 1972 Fins is the crown jewel. Davis had a pedigree that was similar.

But from a prior HC to Canes HC, Mario checks a ton of boxes right out of the gate.

If you watch film it’s obvious Tvd was a lot better in the rpo game and had a far better deep ball. I always said King caused a lot of the issues holding on to the ball too long and leaving the pocket early. I also said Lashlee was not helping him out with the game plans. Either bench him or remove the rpo and zone read aspect. He struggled with both.

The narrative was him and Lashlee was a horrible marriage.
You are right. King wasn't good in that system. Shouldn't have said his biggest problem but he definitely had a problem with drops. Those were game changing drops. TVD is bar none better than King, not making that argument. However, in my opinion he would have struggled much more if the receivers did what what they did to king and dropped balls that were either critical 3 rd downs or dropped TD passes. It didn't allow for a good offensive flow either way.

If it is Mason, my only question is who coaches LBs? Mason has a history of working with DBs.

Schuman as DC/ILB coach made the most sense.

All I know for sure is by those names Mario wants more of a 3-4 / multiple defense. Both guys run that and read / react styles. They use a lot of different formations from 3-4, 4-3, 335 and 425. It’ll be a complete 180 from Manny. Tyrique should be happy ( if he comes back). If could help with other transfers too.

Per game pass/run splits for historically famous ground and pound offenses:

2020 Alabama: 32.7 pass / 36.6 run
2018 Oklahoma: 28.6 pass / 37.3 run
2017 Oklahoma: 30.9 pass / 39.0 run
2021 Ole Miss: 32.8 pass / 44.7 run
2019 Oregon: 31.8 passes / 36.1 runs

These offenses were clearly 3 yards and a cloud of dust, lets hope Mario stays away from these as much as possible. Everyone knows Lincoln Riley and Lane Kiffin are some of the most archaic offensive minds in football.
Now go look at yards per attempt for each of those QBs in those offenses.

Kyler Murray in 2018 threw the ball almost 50 fewer times than Herbert did and had nearly 900 more yards than him in the same amount of games.
Baker in 2017 threw the ball less than Herbert in the same amount of games and had over 1000 yards more.
Mac in 2020 threw the ball 25 fewer times less than Herbert and outpaced him by over 1000 yards.

Those teams created explosive plays in the passing game coupled with their run game. So not only did Mario like to run the ball his OC didn't even use that commitment to the run to gain explosive plays in the passing game.

Throwing the ball horizontally may not be true ground and pound but it works the same way. You're not pushing the ball down the field and you're playing in a 10 yard box of your making.

Three of the teams you mentioned made the playoffs too. The one team who didn't? The team with the QB who most closely resembled Herbert's yards per attempt numbers. Ole Miss had other issues to keep them out of the playoff but they like to throw the ball horizontal too.
