A strong point from an HC Super Mario perpsective for sure.

Schnelly brought nattys from Bama as asst and obviously his 1972 Fins is the crown jewel. Davis had a pedigree that was similar.

But from a prior HC to Canes HC, Mario checks a ton of boxes right out of the gate.

Not saying any of those guys weren't accomplished.

But Schnelly wasn't the HC when all of those good things happened. And its compatible to Mario at Bama. That said, Howard's very short and very bad failed regime as the HC @ Baltimore gave him some HC experience at least. I think this board would have revolted if we hired someone with his CV today.

Butch Davis had zero head coaching experience and only had two years of coordinator experience, anywhere (but it was in the NFL at least). Again, this board would have lost its mind.

Obviously both of those were outstanding hires, as was the South Texas raised, Arkansas schooled, head coach from some backwoods school in a place called Stillwater. We can debate Erickson who we pulled out of a little town called Pullman. But he certainly did well here. Until he didn't (recruiting).

Just saying, on paper, none of those compare to a hire who was a former multiple National Championship player at Miami, a championship winning Miami assistant, took an 0-12 team without a weight room to a conference championship, then was AHC/RC/OL (again, add more rings here) for the greatest coach and dynasty in modern college football, then took a struggling, losing Power-5 team with no recruiting base all the way up to a peak #3 ranking, a 12-win season, a Rose Bowl win, a Fiesta Bowl appearance, and two Pac-12 championships, all while stocking the cupboards with top 10 classes. All in three seasons.

Close your eyes and put yourself back in the AD at the time of the Schnelly, Davis hires. And find a comp for Mario today vs who we hired. Not close.

Now, he's gotta win!

There's a false narrative out there due to Oregon's QB being unable to complete a forward pass this year that Mario is some 3 yards and a cloud of dust type guy.
I’m giving Mario the benefit of the doubt until we know the OC hire but there’s a reason his offense under Arroyo was referred to as “the plodding pistol”.

A former NFL head coach as a college analyst ? Is this real life ? My god.
Are people this unreasonable outside of message boards? And can people please stop with the idea that coaches don't evolve over time? Yes, some are stubborn and refuse to change, but just like any of us in a career, you typically get wiser and gain more knowledge the longer you are in a specific field.

Why would Derek Mason be disappointing?

He has recruited Georgia and Florida extensively as Vanderbilts HC for 7 seasons and this past season at Auburn.

Mason has worked under Vic Fangio (Stanford) and Leslie Frazier (Vikings). I would take those two over Smart, Muschamp and Lanning any day of the week.
Now this is something that speak volumes….I haven’t dug deep in all the potential candidates background coaching history, but when reading up on defenses and schemes, one name that always intrigued me has been Vic Fangio. Would LOVE to get someone from his coaching tree. Now that you mention Mason has coached under him (although it’s been years) and hopefully still has a close contact to discuss schemes. That would be major! Brandon Staley, former Rams DC and now Chargers HC credits Vic for his success, and studied him from his Community College coordinating days.

I also have a best friend of mine that played for Vic, Rex, Bowles……and said that Vic is the smartest football brain he’s ever been around. Said his in-game adjustments on the fly are bar-none. Which says a lot if assistants under him can possess that quality.

Because a big thing in football is being able to adjust on the fly. Which I feel like was one of Manny’s biggest failures (although there’s countless, but we won’t dive into that). We often heard too much from him that “Well they did something totally different from what we’ve seen on film” smh I’m getting mad just from typing that s**t. Of course if you advertise that to be an issue, every team will look to confuse yo dumb a** each week because you broadcasted it and didn’t adjust in time to make it count.

Needless to say, if Mason has learned under Vic and obtained that ability to adjust and create multiple looks week-in-and-week-out then he’ll a home run without a doubt. Based on my knowledge of Vic and hearing how multiple Mason has been in the past, it gives definite hope that we’ll be a defense that lines up in a MINT Front (4i-0-4i) one week, then 3-3-5 the next week, and 4-2-5 the next, even the 5-1 and two deep safeties that’s changing the league a bit. Or all within the same game of course, and all based on the tendencies that cause issues for opponents where the coaches now have more to try and teach their offense to counter. We have to remember these are college kids who minds are still developing and they have other responsibilities (school) so overloading them within one weeks time is a lot for a coach to try and do. So most coaches live with the fact that they can’t teach their O-Line every blitz package possible.

Let’s just hope that this thought of mine is actually true lol I guess we’ll see.

One MAJOR question for @Cribby, if it is indeed Mason, how likely would he be able to pull Jones away from his verbal commitment to Auburn and instead sign with UM. I’m not sure he has actually signed anything yet, right? Or even get M’ba to use his one-time transfer option to leave and come to Miami?
