It’s not a rumor & I don’t think he’s really in consideration (at least I hope not)...

But I was responding to a post a few pages back that asked what would be so bad about Ponce if he were the OC.

And it forced me to break my trolling & page pushing in this thread for a second & get serious lol

I’m at the point where I’m pretty much okay with just about any OC, but God damnit a Frank Ponce hire cannot be spun in any way as a good hire no matter how hard anyone tries, even the most staunch Saint Cristobal believer couldn’t make that a good hire.
I am an embarrassingly long time member of the Cristobal fan club and you're absolutely right. There'd be no way to spin him as a good hire.

Under the old way of doing things, he would probably be a finalist (which I still wouldn't be a fan of). But he has no business even getting an interview. Not with the way things are now with the increased budget and options available.

$2million dollar budget for a top tier OC & the best we can come up with is fckin Frank Ponce???

When you think of an offense that can take us from being 7-5, to being an ACC contender, is App St’s offense the first thing that comes to mind??

Aside from his relationship with Mario, why would anyone want Ponce as our OC when we literally have the best QB in the ACC? We’re trying to win the Coastal & have a shot at the ACCCG, not just be a serviceable 8-4 team.

It would be the equivalent of Nick Saban hiring Mike Bobo as his OC when Bama can literally afford any OC they want.

It’s settling, not exceeding. That’s an old Miami hire, not a new Miami hire...
(And I mean the new new Miami, not the old new Miami lol)
appreciate this.

Remember when everyone freaked out about Eddie Nunez?

Porsters on here love writing dissertations assuming the worst and crying over rumors. Now it’s Ponce after Hurtt :pgdead:

How about Warren Ruggiero .. Wake Forest .. small school .. set school records.
App State has 20k students, so it doesn't even qualify as a small school lol.

Again, I think if Ponce was really the guy, he would have been named weeks ago.

There are a lot of young, really well-regarded small-school OCs who run very explosive offenses. Would be very content dipping into the non-P5 market.
You don't spend $80 mil on a head coach to go the "he did more with less (against inferior competition)" route with coordinator hires.....unless Frank Ponce has incriminating pictures on you.

I said well-regarded and explosive... I clearly wasn't referring to Ponce lol

I was more so referring to non-P5 coordinators with the resume of a Lashlee before he was hired at Miami

I wasn't attacking you or inferring that you're a Ponce proponent.

Yeah, if a guy has legit P5 experience on his resume and is a coordinator at a place like SMU, Houston, UCF, etc. then I have no problem with "small school" somehow meaning that.

I just don't think someone that's main resume highlight is excelling at a legit small G5 school is where we're supposedly at right now as a program and money-wise.

Where did this Ponce rumor come from?
Per the 247 podcast they heard from a recruit that the recruit had been told a "small school coach" was in play for the OC job. From there they looked at Mario's coaching history and found Ponce was his WR coach (I believe) at FIU and that Ponce is currently the OC at a small school.

No real information is leaking out and this conversation with a recruit is as close as they can get to real info. As evidenced by the length of this thread, people very much want to know what is going on with the OC/DC hires. In the absence of real info, this is what happens.

I took small to mean not a P5 powerhouse, not size of the school, so we're basically in agreement. I still think there are a few OCs at "legit small" G5 schools that I'd consider, but they wouldn't be my top choice. More like Plan B, Plan C candidates.
