I like the hire but I don’t think Steele was option A, B or C. He is similar to Richt, in that he is a great coach past his prime. Still a very good coach but most are looking for that next guy. There is a reason he ended up at Maryland. That said, dude can coach defense. If Manny had hired this dude it would have been an A++++ hire but with our new money it’s B+/A- Definitely more proven than Belk but that comes with the age.
He had a top 10 defense 2 years ago at Auburn. GTFOH with past his prime

So why was he taking a job at Maryland til Mario pulled him back into the land of the living? Regardless, as stated a solid hire but I stand by that statement.
Yes, but a lot of programs want ‘the new thing’ rather than a 60+ year old. And to be fair, what other name program jobs are open? Michigan, but Harbaugh is leaving, supposedly. Plus, Steele took a year off.

So Steele never signed his contract at Maryland but had a office and was working lol
Steeles agent - “Kevin, I have an offer for you at UM. Just to be clear it’s at the university of M…”

Kevin - “**** yes…we’re back!”

Agent - “Maryland”

Kevin - “what the **** did you just say?”

Agent - “I promise to fix this mistake before Monday.”

Well let’s see how much we hired him for.

That’s the point I’m trying to make.

There were rumors we would pay each coordinator up to 2 million each.

Belk isn’t worth anywhere near 2 million IMO and Houston agrees as they offered him 1 million per year in his new contract.

There aren’t many Defensive Coordinators who are worth and/or can command a salary of 2 million a year.

Steele is 1 of those coordinators who can IMO

I am down with Hines Ward. Great football player. His name alone with make him a good recruiter. Dad's will want to meet a Super Bowl MVP. Mom's will know him as a Dancing with the Stars champ. Dude had 1000 catches in the NFL. Tough as nails. Kids will listen to him because he knows what it takes. Already in Boca. It would be a big **** you to Georgia since he is a big time hero.
Not to mention he was quite possibly the best blocking receiver of all time. Would carry a physicality that Mario, Mirabal, Steele, etc are obviously going to try to establish across the team specifically into the WR room too.

It's not my money.
It's not Mario's money.

The point is everyone was touting our new budget and that we're now a "big time" program committed financially to winning. So we go out and pay Mario $8 million a year and talk about our huge stuff budget, only to turn around and not get his top defensive coordinator target because of a buyout?

It's a false rumor or we aren't really ready to splash it around.

At least plan B/C or whatever was solid.
How do you know that Steele wasn’t his number 1 from the jump? Steele could have turned down Mario’s 1st offer. Mario came back later in the game with an offer that Steele couldn’t refuse. Think about it. Why would Steele and UMary NOT already sIgned the deal? How did Mario know exactly when to slip in with a contract if he wasn’t keeping in touch with the situation? Was Steele hoping for a better offer? We really don’t know. All we know is what other people, who really didn’t know everything about the situation, was telling us. Because WE didn’t know about Steele, don’t mean that he wasn’t the 1st guy on Mario’s radar. I do know this much… if a dude outchea coaching my players and recruiting kids for me, you better bet yo ***, he’s signed a **** contract. That’s UMary’s fault.

He's old they said...

"The only thing I ask for, if the Good Lord makes me homeless, do it in warm weather because I can't stand being cold," Steele joked recently.

In many ways, he is in the prime of his career. Steele is 63 but feels 43. He hasn't eaten meat since 1989. He runs four miles per day, 340 days a year. Forget SEC coordinator, that's not exactly the health profile of your average assistant at anylevel.

Yup. @Da Jumbo Mutombo waited too long. I was all prepared to celebrate his ascension to the 100 Club and at my age, I could only hold the wood for so long before I lost interest
