Are you asking who I would take a look at personally? If so, if we’re in the realm of hiring a g5 coach (which I’m totally for a lot of talented coaches at that level) then the options are limitless, imo
With the money we’re supposed to have for staff, and hiring a HC at $8 million per year, I think the expectation has been hiring guys at the higher end of the food chain not purely trying to catch lightning in a bottle.

That said, I’m sure there are great G5 coaches and the right ones would be great.

Paying 1.6 - 2.00 for a top shelf DC isn’t over spending. Your first hires is very important , why not get the exact person you want and get it right? If Houston offers 1.3-1.5 offer 1.8 and say sign the contract. Thats my point In this fake scenario.
This. The entire college football landscape is about overspending. If you're not overspending you're underspending and you get left behind as we so often have. If you've got the guy you want, pay him what you need to and get it done.

Because if you’re spending 2M on a dc it better be of the upper echelon of proven commodities. Belk could be that. But he’s not today.
I get what you are saying. But there is no cap here. Paying him 2 mill is apparently within budget, not forcing us to compromise on something else.

If after all the interviewing is done and you feel Belk is your top choice, you pay what you need. Better to pay above market for your top choice than getting a deal for your 2nd choice. No one will remember these negotiations in 3 years. They will remember the results.

Understood.

I strongly disagree with this but I get the overall point.
