Again, you're making all these points (and they're fine points, and correct) as if I'm saying Spencer Whipple would be a fail, at the surface. It's deeper than that. Why are we hiring Spencer Whipple? Nobody else is. Literally. We have as much money to spend as any other program in the country, why would we hire guys who none of the other top programs are looking at? Because we're smarter than everyone else? This is a budget hire, plain and simple. This isn't who Saban would get. This isn't who Texas or OU or Ohio State is hiring to call their plays. Prior to last month, hiring someone in the same ballpark as those programs was laughable. Because we were broke. We had to hire the Spencer Whipple's of the world. That's no longer the case. We are the richest program in the conference and one of the richest in the country. Act like it and hire an established monster, not a kid who has called plays at UMass and one week in the NFL cause donkey *** Kliff had a cold.
I never said you said he would be a fail. But what say you? How do you think he would perform? Take a position.
I am addressing what you wrote. That he is some cop out on-the-cheap hire. High level coordinator's don't grow on trees. It's REALLY hard to find one that can do it. It's not like going to War-Mart. Even the OC's at some of the really big programs leave a lot to be desired. Go through the top 25 and tell me how many you think would be home run hires here that would come for $2M. There aren't many established ones out there that we'd want. And the few that we might want are already making a lot, some don't want to move their families, or are in line for a HC position and don't want to start over. If you're a really good top 10 OC you're next stop is HC. We kicked the tires on a ton I'm sure. Actually, I know. So identifying an up and coming innovator is what high level HC's do. It's where you can find an edge. It's not being cheap, it's being better.
It's what Oregon did when they plucked Chip Kelly from New Hampshire to be OC.
It's what Oklahoma did when they plucked Lincoln Riley from East Carolina to be OC.
It's what Alabama did when they plucked Pete Golding from UTSA to be Co-DC/DC.
It's what Mark Stoops did when he hired a low level asst Liam Cohen from the Rams who only called plays at Maine. Very similar to Whipple's CV.
You basically just said Bob and Mark Stoops and Nick Saban made dumb, cheap hires.
And Spencer Whipple isn't toiling away at NH, ECU, or UTSA like those guys were (though he did pay his dues at UMASS already). He's working in the NFL studying under Kliff Kingsbury, Sean Kugler, Cam Turner, and some others. Talk about going to school. AND he called a game and they scored 37 points! Talk about an audition! If you have identified him as the real deal, and you've done your due diligence with everyone he works for, has worked for, coaches, and knows, you make your move. You don't care what message board mopes think.
I know you think Briles walks on water, and you know I think he would be a "good" hire, but keep in mind that his most recent market value was to take an OC position at a 2-10 bottom-dwelling SEC team in the middle of nowhere. The top 25 wasn't exactly beating down his door either. He's not some great answer. And Mario clearly decided not to go in that direction. Oh, and even after ARKY improved these last two seasons, nor did any of the other top program that were looking for coordinators. So... you know.
If it were as simple as spending a couple of hours on google to find your coordinators, it would be easy. It's not. Most fail. There are levels to this. Maybe we just sit back and let it play out. We have high level professional people in charge now. Finally.
PS- I don't think we're handing the offense to Whipple! I just like the idea of the young innovator. Oh, a la Joe Brady a year ago. Not dissimilar.
