The vocabulary for "BBQ" varies a lot, depending on where you live. In the West (I live in Cali), I've never heard the word "cookout" ever used. Here, BBQ is the word of choice that covers both grilling foods and using smokers. BBQ is both a verb (I'm gonna BBQ some steaks) and a noun referring to the physical grill (lets light the BBQ). It's not used to refer to the food cooked on the BBQ.

For my friends in Georgia, they refer to "grillin out" when cooking on the grill.

In Miami, I'm not sure how it's described. I used to go to Shortys quite often when I lived in Coral Gables. Isn't that BBQd chicken and ribs?

It's definitely regional. A cookout is the noun. Grilling or barbecuing is the verb. When using barbecue as a noun you're almost always referring to some kind of slow smoked meat.

We've got Shorty's and Sonny's here but neither is particularly good. Bland meat slathered in BBQ sauce. There's a couple of good spots around south Florida but it's hardly something we're known for.

Unless you're talking about Lechon Asado, the Cuban roast pork that's usually cooked at a low temperature for long periods of time. Either over an open pit or in a caja china. Fortunately, we can get good roast pork all over town.

No I mean the guys who take barbecue seriously. Go to the Carolinas or Texas or Kansas City and call cooking hamburgers on a grill "barbecue". They'll laugh at you and call you a yankee.

Gotta love the offseason around here. LOL. I am getting a lesson in BBQing 101. Must admit I didnt know there was a big difference either between a BBQ and a cookout.

Yeah... I learned that when I moved to Virginia. If it's not low and slow then it's a cookout. I found myself telling my parents that they don't bbq anything, they grill. There's a lot of Carolina influence here so the sauce is often strongly/mostly vinegar.

I could handle the laughter, but it would be an abomination to the Nth degree to be called a Yankee. I can't think of nothing worser.
