FSU is down some big men
Florida State forward Phil Cofer’s sophomore season is over.
Cofer had surgery to remove bone spurs from his ankle and will miss the rest of the regular season, Seminoles head coach Leonard Hamilton said Thursday.
Cofer (6-8, 218) is FSU’s most versatile player with his length and leaping ability, who came off the bench at the power forward position behind senior Montay Brandon.
Hamilton said the injury has been a lingering issue for Cofer, who averaged 3.8 points and two rebounds in 11 games this season.
“I don’t expect him to come back at all this year,” said Hamilton, who is unsure if Cofer was eligible for a medical redshirt. “It’ll be a couple of weeks before he can even put weight on it.”
Losing Cofer is a blow for the Seminoles, who lack depth in the frontcourt behind Brandon, senior center Boris Bojanovsky, junior forward Jarquez Smith and freshman center Chris Koumadje.
FSU is also without senior center Michael Ojo, who is slowing coming along from knee surgery before the season.
“He’s coming along fine,” Hamilton said of Ojo. “We’re going to let nature take its course, and not try to rush it.”
The Seminoles were manhandled on the boards during their loss to North Carolina on Monday, surrendering 50 rebounds to the Tar Heels behind a career performance from senior forward Brice Johnson, who scored 39 points with 23 rebounds.
