is that the most ever in the storied program in an opener? I know some of these guys will mysteriously earn redshirts but I can't recall when Miami ever played more than a half-dozen or so guys who were true freshman( even during the probation days with Butch). And in 2001 the four guys who earned letters were special( Gore, Taylor, Rolle, Winslow II)

Perhaps it says something about Golden's recruiting, unfortunately, it probably says more about Shannon's.I think we'll know that UM is back when this staff can simply redshirt the large majority of their incoming classes. Simply put, they're not in 2012.

( I just really hope that old saying about for every freshman you really play, that equates to one loss on your season, no longer applies)

But hey,( Golden-ism alert), come Saturday afternoon, there will be 65 guys ready to play like Miami Hurricanes

I wonder how many freshmen saw action in 97/98? I would have to think close to this many at some point. We had A LOT of dudes play.

I remember 97 that Wayne, Moss, Morgan, Myers(I think), and a few others, but I remember many of the interior lineman like Damione Lewis did RS.....

Times are different regarding freshman. They have all these camps in HS and many start a semester early. USC always played freshman when they were dominant.

Still 15 is insane but Flowers is the only one starting day 1. Possibly Bush. Although by seasons end a few more should be starting- Howard, maybe a WR.

What an eye for talent on Butch. Dude is an idiot at running a program but knows a player when he sees him. Unbelievable roll call of studs and he did it again at UNC.

No doubt. Butch would be great as a talent evaluator/advisor role on a staff.

Let's see if we can name the 15:

Bush
Howard
Duke
Lewis
Jenkins
Crawford
Terry
Flowers
Waters
Hamilton
Hoilett
Isadora
Ivery
Moore

Am I missing anyone?

Can't remember the exact number but it seems like we had quite a few EE's this year too.

That's still a ton of guys but even getting here 6-8 months early definitely helps. Then you figure guys like Duke and Tracy would be seeing the field for just about anyone.

Your list is pretty spot on with the exception of Isadoira and Ivery. I think both redshirt. I think O'Donell plays and McCord

I think Ivery is ahead of Grimble and Briscoe right now. He might be 5 on the depth chart so he will play.

As far as I can tell, only Flowers will start.

Howard, Duke, Lewis should log plenty of time and contribute. I don't really worry about those guys leading to losses. Just me.

The other guys are going to see the field but in lesser roles.

I think we will be okay.

The day of reckoning is upon us. These young kids I have a feeling will play better than the last two years upper classmen (minus the few studs that showed up everygame i.e. Spence) and they will show us that we are not very far off of where we want to be headed. We might see more than 15 get on the field for a few snaps including special teams....lets hope everyone is ready.

You are most likely right. He will see the field, albeit not that often. Sad that Grimble came in so highly touted and hasn't made a bigger impact. I didn't expect him to start, but he should be ahead of the incoming freshmen. Especially considering that all 3 of the freshmen DT's, if I am not mistaken, came in summer.

I hear ya about Grimble. On the bright side, Ivery is a kid that Golden identified late in the process, took from those turds over at Louisville, and now looks like he could be an impact freshman. I just hope it has as much to do with skill as it does depth chart necessity.

Sounds to me like Ivery has been passed by Moore. And Porter will be back soon. So I'm not sure whether Ivery will end up logging much time this year.

Grimble, he just isn't that good. There's a reason we 'pulled' him off the West Coast.

Too early to add Moore to your Golden/evals discussion? Or was he already there?

His commitment was met with a collective groan because everyone was so desperate for DTs.

I see the Wilbur Valdez treatment for Grimble come December.
