Smith, Scott, Gunter, Armbrister....

You know that thing that The Wolf says in Pulp Fiction when Jules and Vincent start thinking they are free and clear? That's exactly how I feel about this.

I surely hope that their practice performance can translate to Saturdays, but these guys are total unknowns right now. I am cautiously optimistic though.

It's a major stretch to say that these guys playing has nothing to do with competition. Smith is all about competition. He played a ton last year and probably would not have played for any team we've had in recent memory except maybe 2007. His competitors are oft-injured Porter, Pierre, Luther Robinson. Somebody has to play. Scott's competitors are not exactly Santana Moss. Armbrister is almost certainly playing because Gaines has been hurt and/or ineffective. Gunter I know nothing about but, again, somebody has to play corner. I have nothing against any of these guys but to act like they are really good players is a stretch when none of them has shown anything. All we really know is that nobody else at their position has proven to be much good and somebody has to play.

I agree that it's impressive that they've made first string. And that could mean that Golden has found diamonds in the rough, especially Smith and Armbrister, who had to reshape themselves to be able to play at this level. But to be fair, Mike Williams was also a starter last year, so the competition may not be as strong as we want to believe, at least not yet. Smith had to beat out L Rob, O Pierre and a bunch of freshmen. Gunter had to beat out a bunch of freshmen, Scott is physically unique as a WR among all non-freshmen, and I doubt Armbrister starts against BC, if Gaines or EJ are healthy, and Kirby would have been first in.

Net/net, I'm impressed that these guys are outperforming others on the team. But let's wait to see how they play in a real game before we get too excited.

That's one way to look at it. Or another way is...the other guys are so bad that these guys are starting. I mean didn't Ambrister JUST move to LB? You think its good news he's already starting?

Heard from someone at the program that Gunter was really high on their list, and was made a priority when he visited.. They were serious about him from the get-go.

None of these guys have done a **** thing yet. Not saying they won't, but as of right now and today, what are we getting all happy about?

Nice to see guys the coaching staff targeted step up and contend for starting spots. You hate when you see a "reach" and the kid never sniffs the field. Too many of those these last few years.

Some of these guys were simply taken because we were desperate for depth, with that said, I'm happy they're getting coached up and performing on the field.

Smith, Scott, Armbrister, and Gunter are just proof that Golden knows talent when he see's it and will have talent "oozing out the door" soon enough.

"CBS Sports national recruiting analyst Tom Lemming thinks Golden can be a superstar recruiter at Miami. Last year, Lemming named Golden the top recruiter in the country for the work he did at Temple.

"The pressure was enormous for [Kirby Hocutt] to come up with a good guy," Lemming said. "Now, you have Jimbo Fisher at Florida State and Florida, who replaced Urban Meyer with a great choice in Muschamp. Miami needed a good recruiter and could have really suffered, but they hit a home run.

"With Al Golden, I believe he's as good as Nick Saban, Urban Meyer. Pete Carroll, Mack Brown and Jim Tressell, who I consider the top five recruiters in the country. He's as good as those five, he just never had the platform like he will at Miami.

This year, he'll have a quality class, just not as good because most kids are already committed. But if anybody can get them back to the glory days of the 1980s and 1990s where talent was oozing out the door, it's Al Golden.""

you act like you have actually seen any of them in practice enough to form an opinion is a stretch.
You haven't.

Armbrister is the most intriguing to me.
Textbook JJ move by bringing safety's down to LB. Has the size, speed and body frame to be special.
