Should we expect the defense to look any better this week?

I still don't trust Coach D to dial up pressure other than obvious passing downs and giving the offense the perfect scenario to run a screen play on us.

I'm expecting improvement, but I'm still expecting for us to get picked apart due to no pass rush.

I am actually worried about regression since we are playing a team that we don't know they are running the ball 98% of the time. We have done ok at stopping the RB's at least on some 3 and short or 4th and short situations. My fear is when we don't know if it going to be a run or a pass on 3rd and 5 that we will give up 7 yards every time.
I said something similar in another thread. Our defense can be adequate against a one dimensional offense but really struggles against a team that can actually run + throw the ball. It wouldn't surprise me to see another shoot out this week.

I think our secondary is 10x better than the BC game. I love that the young guys are getting their shot and rising to the challenge. The aggressiveness is starting to pick up as well. Would like to see more press underneath, but D'O either doesn't seem to believe in it or doesn't trust the players to make plays right now.

I think this d will keep improving. I think I saw that both their starting O tackles were hurt, so maybe we can get some pressure from the edge. If so, could be our best game so far. If not, it could be a shootout.

Either way, I doubt we hold them under 24.

who's the tougher qb Klein or Glennon? Also, wasn't Klein one of the top players in college last year, based on production, not potential or NFL future?

Exactly! As I stated in another thread ..... They have a good QB who does throw well and run well .... and, they have some decent running backs! Thus, we must defend both pass and run! Oh, and a mobile QB must be covered! If we can't control the line of scrimmage we are back to the same issues of the first 3 games! If our O can keep their O with limited time on the field, we have a much better opportunity to win!

Klein was/is our worse nightmare, he can do the read option and pass when needs to so I go with him. Glennon is a pure drop back passer so if we can't get pressure on him that will be a big difference to whether we come out with a W or L.

Lets not forget how many 3 step drops Rettig had, or just a first read completion because we played so far off. I am really looking for us to press in anything other than an obvious passing down. This takes away the quick hitters and allows us to try to get after the qb. I think we will start the game with the 4 DE package! I think we will try to get aggressive but only with our front 4. Their line is a bit suspect and I think we can get there if we give the DL time to get there. A lot of these guys have improved their pass rush in the past few weeks but that wont matter on a 3 step drop. This is a big opportunity for us to see where our development is. I am not expecting a shutout but I dont want to see this kid throw at a 80% completion rate either. And who said this qb runs? 25 carries for -35yards???? I think we try to collapse the pocket from the edges and make him uncomfortable

I can't say that I have great faith. For a team that struggles vs balance, GT and Bethune probably set up as our easiest offenses to deal with. I hope we can control the ball some on O and their chances are limited. Otherwise, seeing is believing and we havent stopped anyone but a subdivision team.

How good of a running team is NCST? If they arent that good at running the ball I think we can get a grip on them at some point.

that or they decide to pass 40 times and get 400 yards through the air.

but I was wrong about our ability to keep GT in check so hopefully I will be wrong again.

I think Tevin threw the ball eight times against us, that's why we won. Their O is really putrid. If Glennon can throw at will and throw a lot we are in for the long haul. Not sure who comes out ahead in a barn burner

Incrementally, everyone benefits from the practice reps and game time, but there are so many variables.

A great home crowd to cheer on the D, injuries, schemes, mental errors/lapses, penalties, adjustments, the weather, execution and coaching. My impression is that we will give up scores, but if we can get some big plays and turnovers, we can compensate for that.

Exactly.

It was just like last year. Our defense was pretty horrible starting the year and then got better as the year went on. Are they going to be dominant? Not even close. However, they need to do enough to win the game just like Georgia Tech. Our D stepped up and I think we see that this game. As long as we dont get down early, I think the D will play great.

Yep. We will need to score 40 to win today.
