NFL prospect Seantrel Henderson says he used marijuana while at Miami

by Matt Porter
Former Hurricanes offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson had a rocky time in college. He was suspended at least three times by UM and was considered a disappointment for not living up to his massive potential.

Now faced with the prospect of trying to earn an NFL future, Henderson is opening up about his struggles. The 6-foot-7, 331-pound 22-year-old told the Miami Herald at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. he was suspended last year for use of illegal drugs.

From the Herald:

“I was partying a little bit too much at times,” Henderson said, when asked to explain his three (at least) suspensions at UM. “I had got into trouble a couple of times for marijuana. I just put all that behind me.”

Such candor is refreshing for anyone — let alone someone trying to make the NFL. “Honesty is key,” Henderson said, when asked why he elected to discuss his past trouble with drugs.

Use of illegal drugs is against UM athletics policy.

Heading into his senior year, Henderson had been suspended at least two times– and dealt with several injuries and off-the-field issues. In August, Henderson’s teammates and coaches expressed hope he had changed, but by October, he was suspended again. At that time, coach Al Golden said he hoped Henderson would explain himself. “I’m not going to answer these questions for Seantrel anymore,” Golden said.

But while apologizing for his latest transgression, Henderson declined to elaborate on what he had done, saying only he “broke one of the team rules. I apologize and I’m just trying to move on now.”

This week was Henderson’s first public comments about his “partying.” Only those close to him know if he has “moved on” from that stage, or if he even wants to; after all, marijuana use is not uncommon among NFL players. But it is against NFL rules. Even if he didn’t make public comments, concerns about Henderson’s character will likely be too great for some NFL teams to consider drafting him.

It’s certain someone will, though; he’s too big and too talented to not hear his name called by an NFL team. Draft projections rate him anywhere from the second to fifth rounds. He has drawn rave reviews in Mobile this week for his NFL-ready size and strength.

It’s his unmet potential, though, that lingers. UM fans (and certainly, reporters) will forever wonder what Henderson’s college career could have been like if he had solved the issues that held him back.

It's time to make money. Seantrel is gonna show up and start to play up to his potential. Dollar, dollar bills.

At least we'll be able to lay claim to him when he's mauling guys in the league.

No doubt. Those guys dig in to every aspect of a kids life. Best to be up front and honest with these people. He'll be a stud in the leauge.

Had to say this but I can't root for him to make it. He was selfish from the day he made Shannon wait while he had his hair done and he never changed. I'll be shocked if he can turn it around.

Dumb lazy a$$ mother fucher. Never shed a tear when these underachieving selfish players move on. There is nothing to protect them from the world now.

Some people act like you can flip a switch and go from under achieving to All Pro in one year. Yes, he has remarkable God given talent and skill set but by his own admission, he's a bit of a partier and couldn't nail down a starting spot here. Now, he's going to be "ballin out?" Hmmm, color me skeptical but I wish him well. Millions are at stake.

Wut.

Kid came back his SR year (didn't have to), played solid, was into the games, didn't cause any problems in his final season. Underachieving maybe. Will likely have a great career with some team that steals him in the 3rd or 4th round.

Good grief.

He's lucky he wasn't booted from the team. The rule ought to be one strike you're out. There are plenty of hard-working kids out there that would have been thrilled to have the opportunity to play in his place.

Okay stoners, save your powder. Unless of course you can handle the return fire. ;-)

Seems like many of our supposed program changing recruits fall through the cracks or on their face here. Its really setting this program back among other well known things...

Henderson/most of MNW class/Arthur Brown/Willie/Baby Jesus now being anointed Judas etc. etc. etc...

He's literally a chimney. Trust me.

Hopefully it's behind him so he can max out his potential. He's a good kid.

The light is only coming on because of the $$$ he may cost himself. Not hard working, entitled who just used his size to dominate in HS. Once he got to College he didn't put in the work and it showed. Could've easily been a top 5 pick on his talent/size alone if he would've taken his opportunity seriously. Now he's playing catch up. Could care less if he makes it. He wasted more than half his time here partying and clearly being a chimney...

Did his dad ever become a rapper? Seems like that was part of his story when he commited to USC and then switched to Miami. Anyway, hope he gets it together.

Who even gives a **** anymore? I honestly would be surprised if he fell past the third round. I think once he grows up a bit he's a bonafide stud.

sure it had nothing to do with him not living up to what he came in with....glad he has moved on!!

Dude is destined to be a Bronco. That way when it's cold, they won't know if it's his breath or bong smoke

Seantrel played well when he played. His biggest problem was that he never quite adjusted to being a college student-athlete. That immaturity kept him off the field. Now that football is his job, he will be that much better.

It doesn't get mentioned much, but Seantrel was in great shape for a big man. That tells me he cares. And it's not like he got in shape for the draft. He's been pretty lean since Golden got here. When he was actually on the field, he played hard. It was not uncommon to see him 15 yards downfield trying to finish a block.

That doesn't excuse his stupid mistakes, which hurt him and hurt the team. But I like Seantrel and believe he will be a Pro Bowler. So far, so good at the Senior Bowl.
