Shannon Dawson is the New OC/QB Coach

View as article
This is a very mediocre hire. Wouldn’t be surprised if we are looking for a 3rd OC after this season

I’m a bit confused why so many are pumping this hire up. Not many kind words for him from Houston fans and it seems Holgorsen took over most duties midseason.

Most positive sign from this hire is that Mario is showing that he is willing to try something different. I hope like **** it works out.

Dawson took over in 2016. I mean it's not a bad season but seems like Mullens regressed going from Monken in 2015 to Dawson in 2016.

I think some of those total numbers more line with the previous year if you account for him playing 3 less games in 2016 and most of the averaged numbers are similar.

EDIT: After catching up in the thread I see that several others have pointed out the same

Hire makes a lot of sense, Miami needs a basic offense it can learn easy that will put up a bunch of stats to attract recruits. It's not like we're winning a natty anytime soon. This is our 3rd offense in 3 years, bringing in a complex offense with a ton of new terminology isn't it. In my opinion this is a bridge OC until Mario gets his guys and then we reassess

Neg me to oblivion all you want — and I hope I’m wrong — but Dawson has been a lackluster OC for his entire career. Dig deeper than just last year at UH and you’ll see that. I think we’re in trouble.
We will have a better idea, although not a final one in the spring game.

Hard to tell what is him and what is Holgerson. I think it was mostly Holgerson but maybe this guy is ready.

We are taking a risk. But it can be high reward. I’ll give it a chance.

The most important and exciting thing about these 2 hires is that it tells us a lot about who Mario is at this point. There's been a lot of gloom and doom based on our worry that he has a stubborn football ideology that puts limitations on how good the program can be. Now we're seeing some real evidence that that's not true. No guarantees about these two guys, but wow, there's real reason for hope. Now, let's go out and sell the idea of a dynamic offense to some big time recruits who can shine in it.
I have a feeling Mario is still pretty stubborn but with Zo and Rad in the building and in his ear, people Mario respects, we will have more diversity of thought than they had at Oregon.

I agree I like that fact too that Mario went in another direction. the final decision rests with Mario but he is surrounded by some great advisors and for other opinions and advice it’s a phone call away. he’s really respected in the coaching world.

All I ask is that he does a good enough job to stick around for 3 years and if he does get a head coaching gig that someone is developed below him who can seemingly slide into the role.

It’s a needed change but I’m sick of this changing scheme/philosophy every year or two. I can’t imagine how frustrated the players have been. Just stick with this moving forward!!!
