Secondary thoughts

Its going to be exciting watching these guys play and develop. I'm extremely happy right now.

Now, back to my crow sandwich. (Thought TH was UF bound......happy he is not.).

What I love is the ink isn't even dry on the LOI and our fans are penciling in Bush and Howard as starters.

And who on our depth chart as of right now looks like legit starters?

Go into the first game don't be shocked if it's Brandon McGee and Ladarius Gunter as corners. McGee is now 190 pounds, a senior, and started 12 games last year. Gunter is ready to step in immediately. He's a big kid, athletic, with very good hips, very good speed and has good ball skills. I'm not ready to pencil in any true freshman as a starter. I think Bush can help in press coverage. Physical kid for his size. Don't like him at safety. I think Howard has a great shot to be the nickle. Could either kid start quickly? Both are athletic enough to do so.

what im seeing in this discussion is one big fundamental change - DEPTH!!!!!!!!

That is what we had in the championship years. Guys coming off the field and 2nd and 3rd string just as good running in.

Yep. Depth. Shannon couldn't spell "Depth" if you spotted him the D, E P and T

yep? based on what? These kids have yet to hit the field yet so you don't know what players will be here for depth purposes or if they're any good at this point. ****, keon payne is depth....did he take a meaningful snap this year?

ive heard bush isn't physical...have you seen him play to say he's physical?

Friend of mine who coaches defensive backs watched him closely at a camp and he loved how physical Bush was in press coverage. In his opinion, he thinks that's where Bush can excel at the next level. I respect this guy's opinion.

The tape of him over the summer was impressive. He was mauling WR's at the LOS. Maybe he wasn't big about coming up into the box from the S position, but from what I saw he was more than aggressive enough to play CB.

Yeah I agree with a lot of what you said. I think we could see Gunter as a safety as well. We'll see I like this DB class a lot though.

Not sure who really starts. But, for the first time in a looooong time, we've got some legit competition for playing time. Make RR work for it. Vaughn, earn some PT this year. Bush, Howard, Gunt, Crawford...if you're good enough...earn the playing time.

Competition for playing time should be the ultimate motivator...not what HS you went to and what HS coach said about you or what class you are. It's looking like it's shaping up that way!

Good stuff Gold and Co.

My guess is Gunter plays boundary corner.

Exactly. The days where you couldn't slack in practice because the guy behind you was going to take your spot. SO happy right now.

I think Bush ends up at Safety

I've seen Bush play a few times....I honestly don't think his future is at safety.

He isn't a natural center fielder, he's much better in a pure coverage/chase role due to his athleticism. I'd be pretty surprised if he didn't end up a corner, and I know many on the CCHS staff project him to ultimately be a corner in the long run as well.

Then again, I'm the guy who swore Ray Ray was a bad fit at safety, which I still firmly believe and have seen nothing on the field to change my mind of BTW....but that's another story. We'll see where the staff plugs him in but I firmly believe his skill set is better suited to be a corner.

1. Bush is def a CB.
2. Howard isn't fast enough to play nickel. He's a boundary guy.
3. Finnie will have one of those starting spots on the outside. Book it.

We'll see which of them picks up zone coverage the best. We were insanely bad when we went zone last year. The BC game was a disgrace. You can attribute the majority of that to lack of comfort and some of that to poor instincts.

It's too early to tell who's going to feel the zone the best. From what local coaches have whispered, it is unlikely to be Deon. I'm curious to see how Coach D and company fit his athleticism into the picture.

Bush is the most intriguing one in that I think he'll get looks at both Corner and Safety. We really need Safeties, man. Maybe Gunter gets a look out there as well.

FWIW, I like Antonio Crawford a lot. I think he's the type of guy who can help us in the slot immediately.

+1 to all this. I see Gunter getting first look at S if Howard and/or Crawford and V.Davis are ready for early PT at CB.

McGee may not be good, but he's a senior and he's going to get time most likely. Finnie prolly gets more run too. If Howard is good enough to start early, and Crawford and V.Davis can get on the field, Bush might get some S look too. I definitely think Gunter will need to get a look there because we don't have much at S and he's got size. But if one of our interchangeable non-contributors at S steps forward, maybe we will really have competition and depth at CB.
