Sat right behind UM defense at BC..some tidbits

Two ways to look at it:

(1) D'Onofrio isn't exactly a wizard

(2) He realizes that no matter what he talks to them about, they're so basic it's all about focus.

I'm really reaching on #2. I whiteboard with 10-12 year olds. Even if we run something simple and have practiced it to perfection, they understand it better when I explain the flow. In the heat of the game, players' minds get lost. Simplifying tasks and illustrating breakdowns is a helpful process.

Don't like those comments.

I didn't want to speak out of school because I've spent exactly 0 minutes on a D1 sideline in-game, but every HS program I've ever been around worth it's salt has some sort of visual aid to draw up Xs and Os on the sideline - especially if, as Coach D has stated, the OC was "getting away from" things he'd done in the past. I dunno what to make of this, maybe it's not as big of a deal as it seems to me.

Agreed. It's always better if they can visualize what they are supposed to be doing and what they may have been doing wrong and need to correct. The whole chinese fire drill vibe was unsettling and I think we saw it on the field. There were many times when the defensive unit was just getting lined up when BC snapped the ball. Guys looking to the sidelines for the call, guys not lined up correctly. Yea, game 1 can create those jitters, but if Golden is the master of detail that we've been told, then these kids should have that in the back of their minds by now.

Details.

Last year we were all saying how the frikking linemen were jumping offsides, getting pushed around, holding, abandoning their lanes of responsibility, not tackling, and another Baker's dozen of faults.

Now we're down to broken assignments.

Well frikkin' cry me a river.

This too will be fixed. In time, this will be addressed.

When on a finite journey, it's how far you've come just as much as how far you got left.
