Finally having a chance to share some thoughts....sat 1st row right behind the defense the entire game and was able to interact with the defense a bit.

1) Interestingly, the clearcut vocal leader of the defense the whole game was Cain. He was in everyone's face..especially after BC went up 14 -0. He was firing that group up.

2) Some of the freshmen look great physically. Earl Moore is just thick...I dont think he has a neck. McCord has a nice frame. Jalani was real cool and high 5'd me a few times and gave one of his gloves to a kid next to me after the game....he really looks bigger than last year....so does Pierre..way bigger. The crazy one was Flowers...holy ****..that boy dont look like a freshman. he was right near me in warm ups and son of a gun does that dude pass the eye test.

3) Highlight was after Duke's 1st ever TD as a Cane, he came by the defensive bench at gave me a high 5...then went to high 5 my wife and missed her hand and caught her on the forearm and left his fingerprints there...she is UTough so she kept cheering :)

4) Tracy Howard looks fantastic physically...he was very quite but very engaged and listening when coaches/players were speaking..looks to be a very coachable kid.

5) Stephen Morris was more vocal than I realized...that boy was FIRED UP a few times and pumping his team up.

6) Gionni Paul was hanging by me during the game..was a little shorter than I expected...looks built like a bulldog though.

7) Coach D was really fired up a few times and gave them an earful....but what I was surprised about was I didnt see a lot of whiteboarding and X's and O's on how to correct things...not knocking him..just saying I thought there would be more of that after each series.

8) One thing that seemed odd was that the defensive players didnt seem to be drinking as much fluids as I thought..I hope they are conscious of that...dont want them boys to cramp up in the Miami heat.

9) The freshman overall seemed very engaged and menatlly in the game the whole time I saw them..there was no goofing around at all. These boys mean business.

10) Another highlight was G Terry...one of my new favorite Canes...he needs to add some weight...sat near his Godfather...and GT came up and gave him a huge hug after the game..was very emotional. He gave his gloves to 2 kids next to me...he was just beaming over the whole experience of his 1st game.

I must have been near where you were sitting. As for Tracy Howard, he was getting his ear's lit up in the first quarter. I also saw him bark back at the coaches which I didn't like. I agree about coach D. I was hoping for him to get out he X's and O's and start showing guys where they mistakes were and how to correct them. Just yelling isn't going to help.

I'm thinking you guys had to have somehow missed the whiteboard stuff, otherwise that's just ******* bizarre.

Swaggs...that is a picture from my seat. If I was any closer to Coach D the whole game, we would have been on a date :) There really was no whiteboarding stuff...in fact, the board got kicked and broke in half I believe in the 3rd quarter and was thrown behind the bench and players were tripping over it...now they may have had a backup but it was never used...it was more rah-rah or old fashioned chewing them out..I really didnt hear much scheming.

Vinndogg...you must have been right there with me. I didnt see Tracy getting grilled and talking back to the coaches..thats interesting.

Given the nature of our defensive failures, that is really, really, really odd. So many young kids & schematic failures but no whiteboarding? Hm.

Thanks for the insight, both of you two. Really great stuff. +reps

One thing I don't understand is Gionni Paul. Like you said, kid looks like a bulldog. Is he really that far behind everyone else in the LB group?

Well, has he recovered from the early camp injury yet? I actually saw him at Publix yesterday. Dude is wide as f*, but no more than 5'11".

LULZ Coach D was out there freestyling. Corchin his *** off

I don't think that whiteboarding anything at that point is going to fix anything.. they spent all summer trying to figure out the assignments they don't know... 5 minutes on a whiteboard probably won't change that.

A lot of the failures didn't need much imagination. They weren't covering who they were supposed to be covering. BC wasn't fooling anybody most of the time, well, except the LB's.

McCord was being thrown around like a rag doll by BC's OL. A RS year would be in his best interest to gain weight and get stronger.

FYI, I saw him on campus this morning.

IMO, he's hurt. He's walking with a noticeable limp.

I guess it's entirely possible that's just how he walks, but IMO, he's hurt, which may explain why I didn't see him at all against BC.

Edit: And we possibly won't see him against K-State either ...

Go on...

Because if he's limping on a Thursday, he won't be ready to go for Saturday. That's just my impression.

*I might be totally off and he might be healthy, but limp was noticeable.

Two ways to look at it:

(1) D'Onofrio isn't exactly a wizard

(2) He realizes that no matter what he talks to them about, they're so basic it's all about focus.

I'm really reaching on #2. I whiteboard with 10-12 year olds. Even if we run something simple and have practiced it to perfection, they understand it better when I explain the flow. In the heat of the game, players' minds get lost. Simplifying tasks and illustrating breakdowns is a helpful process.

Don't like those comments.
