University of Miami fifth-year senior quarterback Ryan Williams, who was slated to be the starter next season before he tore the ACL of his right knee in a scrimmage Friday night, underwent 90-minute surgery Wednesday at UHealth Sports Performance and Wellness Institute in UM Hospital.

His mother, Jayne Williams of Pembroke Pines, told the Miami Herald "the surgery could not have gone better. His patella tendon was so long that they were able to take out a small part in the middle of his patella to replace his ACL,'' she said. "They said his kneecap will be absolutely fine.''

Williams said there was "a small tear in the cartilage'' that doctors said "will heal on its own.

He also had a slight meniscus tear that will heal on its own, said Williams' wife, Deanna.

Deanna said when Ryan woke up "the first thing he did was blow me a kiss. He was so drugged up it was comical. He's doing great. Former UM quarterbacks Stephen Morris and Preston Dewey are visiting him right now."

"It was the best you could ever expect for Ryan,'' Jayne Williams said.

Williams said Ryan was sleeping until recently, "but Thursday he's going straight to the training room to get it checked out. Now he'll begin moving forward for rehabilitation.

"He's an amazing kid and is getting so many prayers and so much support from everyone you can imagine, most of whom I've never met. I want to thank every single person praying for hiim.''

She said Ryan, who earned his degree in education in December and his working on his master's, is determined to return to the field sometime next season and "finish his football career with his best friends and teammates.''

Williams said she was especially grateful to UM for its support in the wake of his injury. "From the coaches to the trainers to the doctors, UM has taken amazing care of my son,'' she said. "They worked day in and day out to get the swelling down so they could do this surgery.''

She also said that UM is in the midst of reaching out to Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson to talk with him about his rehabiliation after his major knee surgery.

Hate when they use the patella. It sometimes hinders the rehab because many patients develop patella tendonitis and are not able to rehab as aggressively.

"Return to the field sometime next season...,"

If he returns next season, he would more than likely be 3rd string.

i had the exact surgery, the worse part of it was recovering from the removal of the portion of the patellar tendon.

I'm not sure why they use the patella...I guess that procedure is the "standard" in today's ACL surgeries. They did a similar procedure with RGIII's knees.

Would love for him to be on the squad next year and compete and help train guys, or would be happy for him to go somewhere else and get a shot to start.

Days after Ryan Williams learned he'd torn his ACL, his family says the Miami quarterback is already eyeing his return to football and he intends to be on campus Thursday to begin working his way back.

Williams, the former Miramar High star widely expected to be the Hurricanes starter this fall, underwent a 90-minute surgery Wednesday morning to repair his injured right knee. His parents, Jayne and Rich Williams, said doctors told them the procedure went well and that slight damage to the quarterback's meniscus will heal on its own.

"I met with [Dr. Lee Kaplan] before the surgery this morning and then first thing when he was finished. He was really excited for the less damage to the meniscus and cartilage that might have been a concern," Rich Williams said. "We were all relieved at that. There may have been minute [damage] when he went down, but it was not a high-impact area nor did it need to be dealt with at this time. It was a beautiful report and they said it couldn't have gone better on the removal of the severed ACL and the replacement."

Rich Williams said doctors used a graft from his son's patellar tendon to repair Williams' knee. He is expected to spend a night in the hospital and after that, the plan is for Williams to head straight to Miami's training room to begin rehab.

The quarterback, a fifth-year player and former starter at Memphis, has told his family he wants to be on the field when the Hurricanes travel to Lincoln to face Nebraska on Sept. 20.

"The doctor said it can be four to six months, but he also said looking at Ryan and his strength and how his knee looks that it can be quicker," Jayne Williams said. "Even in a worst-case scenario at five months, that's a little bit in the season and Ryan says, 'If they're telling me six months, that would get me around the Nebraska game and I'll be back before then.'"

Jayne Williams also said that Miami has reached out to the Minnesota Vikings in an effort to learn more about Adrian Peterson's rehabilitation process to see if a similar program can help Williams.

Earlier this week, Miami coach Al Golden said he felt confident Williams could beat any benchmark doctors gave him, although there was no set timetable for his return.

"He's going to work. No one is going to do it harder than he is. Whatever the shortest timetable is, that's the timetable he's going to meet, I promise you that," Golden said Tuesday. "The rest of us have to go work on our football team and obviously our offense."

The Williams family said Wednesday that Ryan was visited by several former and current teammates, including Stephen Morris, Preston Dewey and Clive Walford.

They said if there's been one positive to Ryan Williams' injury it's been the support from coaches, teammates, fans and even complete strangers.

"That's just been amazing. I can't see another college doing something like that. It's been phenomenal," Jayne Williams said. "Ryan has so many people behind him. I can't even fathom it. There have been prayer groups praying for him and we're just lucky to have all of this support."

While Williams recuperates, redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Olsen — who the Williams family says has reached out to Ryan — is atop the Hurricanes' depth chart, followed by sophomore Gray Crow.

Miami has one practice remaining Thursday before its spring game on Saturday.

the Nebraska game is his time table. its possible. he really didnt do anything really bad to it but if Olsen or Kayaa playing lights our forget about it.

they been doing this for a long time. not only that UMiami is far superior to anything else in this state, care-wise. not sure about costs though. but if you want the best, you go to Miller at Miami.

Zvijac, Uribe, and company are the guys that did McGahhee and they operate at Doctors hospital which is a baptist health facility. If Ryan was treated at UMH someone else did it,

It is actually much stronger than a hamsting or allograph and allows the athlete to return to running and cutting much quicker. Patellar tendon is almost always used for athletes.
