This dude had a fire burning in him a refusal to be blocked his intensity was unmatched.

Clearly one of the all time greats to ever put on a Cane uniform.

To find a player in Rusty’s mold is almost impossible.

In my honest opinion

Apologies in my rant but I just love Rusty type players .

He knew his time was fleeting he knew any play could be his last and cherished every second.

This attitude was very contagious and overtook HIS team till a refusal to lose was the only thought.

Thanks OP it’s an pleasure to honor Rusty .

BE NICE TILL ITS TIME NOT TO BE NICE.

This IS RUSTY

One of the most depressing injuries in UM football history right up there with Gore, Davenport, Matt Britton.
YES , his knee was hemorrhaging badly pain almost made him unconscious.

Melvin Bratton and McGahee injures only came close to the intensity of Rusty’s .

Rusty’s skin was the only thing that held his knee together .

In his first two seasons at Miami, Medearis totaled 20 sacks despite starting only 15 games. In a game against Texas Tech as a freshman, Medearis was credited with 5.5 sacks, 12 tackles and one quarterback pressure.

He was considered the top defensive end in the nation by College and Pro Football Weekly magazine after his sophomore year, the Hurricanes' 1991 national championship season.

He never came back...that knee injury was one of the most gruesome and catastrophic....was told he could risk amputation if he came back. He was a certain NFL top pick....

He did receive $500,000 tax free from injury insurance....a good amount of money in 1994.
He did come back but he was never the same player

Rusty was a 2X All-Missouri High School LB back in the Ozarks. Not an understatement to say, though, that the Springfield, MO area is not exactly a feeder area for UM recruiting.

Anyone recall how he even came to UM's attention and which coach(es) were responsible for seeing his potential and recruiting him?

He tells the story in his HOF speech on page 1. I’m not gonna give it justice by recapping it. He did basically call ND a bunch of pvssies tho

I absolutely loved him. The snapshot during the Colorado game brawl of him holding a Colorado player by the neck and threatening to hit him over the head with his helmet that is in his other hand, will always be stuck in my mind. I was even scared for the dude.

Technically he did come back in 1994, then medically retired during the season.

The fact that he was able to make it back - albeit briefly is another testament to his drive.

It was a cheap shot too by Arizona that damaged the knee.
