Spring Robinson updates battles in secondary, talks recruiting efforts

Coaches are conservative. If a guy can give them a 7 consistently, they’ll take it over a freshman that will give them a 10 sometimes and a 5 other times because he got confused on the play.

If you understand anything about numbers and managing risk (which is what Diaz is all about) you understand consistency is key. When you're not sure what a guy is gonna do for you, it can be dangerous.

There are guys on this team that clearly need to be benched as we know everything we're gonna get from them already. Wiggins and Ivey specifically come to mind. While I'm not stoked about Carter continuing to play, I don't see any issue starting veterans in Hall and Bolden (who is probably our best player on D right now, by the way) over complete unknowns in Williams x2.

You don't take a guy fresh out of boat driving school (or whatever the f--- it is) and make him the Captain because he got the best grades and showed talent for it.

I hope yall weren’t under the illusion the Secondary was going to have a massive makeover lol

I told yall already, the Secondary will remain the exact same, except Tyrique will replace Al Jr & Tae Williams will be the 2nd team/4th Safety in rotation...

We’re living & dying with Bolden, Hall & Carter; whenever a coach says “these guys have played a lot of Football”, that means experience over everything. Quality of play doesn’t matter, simply number of games is the barometer.

Like I said in the other thread a couple days ago, if you thought James Williams was coming in & playing right away, ain’t happening, he’ll play 4 games on ST’s & Redshirt.

Ivey will start at Boundary, prepare yourselves for it.
Trob won't be here long if that's the case.

Did anyone actually listen to the interviews from the kids the past two days? Why not wait and see how play improves. It sure sounds to me like those guys in the secondary feel they are getting coached better and are improving their technique. That's also TRob and DVD's job. It makes sense that the older guys would have the trust of the staff early on; they HAVE played when the bullets fly. It's 9 practices in; let's see where things are in August. I had no doubt that seniority would put certain guys on the field to start vs Bama. I also believe if some of the younger guys demonstrate between now and then they know what they are doing, they will see the field too.

The coaches want to WIN. I don't buy they sacrifice that just to keep the older guys on the field.

Let me further add, it sure sounds to me like TRob and DVD are working hard with the younger guys to get their skills and their confidence to the point they can be trusted to hit the field. They say that. They seem to have identified a few guys who have shown they will be able to do this sooner, rather than later. I believe they will get their chance right away.... Who cares if they start. What's important is that they play.

So 3 safeties who have 3+ years experience are ahead of 2 safeties with 9 practices under their belt and 1 with still in HS?

Stunning!!

Yet, all but the HS player, since he is still in HS, have gotten a lot of discussion

Have to wonder if these off-season tears are trolling for traffic clicks when some of the posts are “you won’t see anything different this year, but these 6 differences in the two deep, name drop Ivey to **** people off”...

The battle to watch will be Ivey v. Couch.

Couch started while Ivey was out, and then Couch got hurt when Ivey came back (which means Ivey has been starting next to Stevenson).

It will be very interesting to see how that plays out when both are healthy. And then you add Blades to the mix.

I'm a couch fan and think/have thought he was the best cover corner on the team. Has he bulked up and been more physical this offseason?

As bad as Ivey has been, I believe there's potential there and he's a big CB that TRob covets. You need that for the run game.

I wonder someone has ranked schools position group’s against one another? Interesting to see, imo. Pretty much rank the ACC’s positions groups to see who has the better QB room, RB room, and so on.

Balom will probably be fazed out IMO.
We have too much legit talent at Safety with the young guys.
Hate to say I agree, but I just can't see him getting PT over Avantae, Kinchens or even J Williams. You've GOT to find a way to get the three I just mentioned onto the field next season.

You more so have Blades in the mix. I don't think he adds anything but maybe those 3 years were a façade.

If he wants to stay around and develop, he’d be a great candidate to compete for a job as a redshirt Jr/Sr. But he was never going to be in the mix with this secondary

So start players who have played in tons of games but have made no game changing plays and are continually out of position just because Diaz knows they’ll be consistently a C or C+ at best?

Is that the competition Diaz preaches about?

“The press technique has been good”.

Could this be the end of free releases and we let our guys tough up some receivers?

These are still 18-22 y/o kids. They're all still learning and developing. We have a new staff. Let's give this new staff and kids a new chance this year and see if they can prove any prior assessments we've made of each incorrect. If not, seems like we got plenty of new blood coming after them.
