I hope it's true and I also hope a certain "Playmaker" does the same with his son and nephew a couple years from now.

Not sure why this has been surprising or confusing, even without confirmation. Ray Jr. is loaded. Miami needs bodies but will have limited scholarships. If you pay your child's tuition it does not count against scholarship totals (see Bobby Frasor, UNC guard in 2008 whose parents paid his tuition his senior year so Roy could sign another McDonald's all american). Non-scholarship players can play (none of the Ivy league schools have athletic scholarships). The only time this situation is in question is when there has been a recent adoption (see Michael Oher's recruitment, or the two Indiana freshmen basketball players who were suspended this year, not a perfect analogy, but probably close enough). Therefore I have no reason to doubt that Ray Jr. will pick up the tab for his son's education and we will have an extra scholarship to use.

He could problly pay tuition for as many kids as he wants

I don't think he could do that.

Could not do that. Paying for anyone other than your kid would be an improper benefit.
Only loophole would be donation to Athletic Department endowing a scholarship. But, that endowed scholarship would be a part of the number we can keep each year via recruiting, so that wouldn't really be useful in the way you want it to be.
