RHP Jackson Cleveland transfers to Miami

personally (and this doesn’t relate to Cleveland), if we’re going to be scouring lower level talent for average options that aren’t even being sniffed by real P5 teams…

I’d look towards the JUCO rank more. There’s a ton of talented kids we could grab to help this roster, hungry guys eager to prove their worth at the next level and some with multiple years of eligibility. Kids with solid tools that translate to the P4 level and into pro ball.
Do we have any JUCO commits? Idk why I am under the impression we do.

Unless there’s some sarcasm I’m missing here…which if that’s the case, I apologize for the below breakdown.

Sorry to dampen the parade here. Is he a good arm? Sure he’s fine. In the ACC however, he should be a 5th or 6th option out of the pen.

92-93 is decent but it’s pretty flat, not much movement on his fastball. His mechanics are fine, explodes off the ground when he throws…but his frame = absolutely tapped out velo wise. Slider is ok, decent break but he doesn’t tunnel it with his fastball exceptionally well. It’s good don’t get me wrong, it’s just nowhere close to an elite bullpen arm imo.

Against P5 opponents in 2023, here’s how he fared…

Baylor: 1 inn, 1 hit, 0 runs (or K’s or BB’s)

Texas A&M: 2 and 1/3, 3 hits, 2 runs (both earned)

Oklahoma: 2 and 1/3, 4 hits, 4 runs (all earned)

So he got hit a bit by actual quality teams. Baylor is garbage, they went 22-31 overall and 10-20 in a very down BIG 12 conference.

He’s got some save experience which is always a plus, but he had a 5.81 ERA heading into conference play. He feasted on garbage competition, finishing the year against McNeese and he gave up 5 runs in 2+ innings.

D$ trying to use Lamar’s team stats to cover up his, but opponents hit .268 off him in 2023 and it wasn’t much better in 2024, allowing close to a hit per inning…in a conference where only two teams had over a .540 winning percentage. The level of competition in the Southland is nothing close to the ACC.

Stop acting like we’re killing the portal. We are doing NOTHING compared to UF, LSU, Texas…the BIG DOGS. That’s where we should be as a program. We want results? Pay up, don’t beat your chest for terrorizing inferior and small schools. We’ve taken a lot of quantity, just not a whole lot of quality.

This is nothing more than a .500 team at best, as of right now. Wake me up when we actually sign covered portal guys. When we’re beating Tennessee, FSU, UF, Texas, Arkansas, Clemson, UGA, Vandy, UNC, etc for recruits.
Myself I don't think much of the pitching we've been bringing in. Not at all saying we're getting great pick ups. However they are the best options most of these small time schools have. Even if we were getting more quality(even though JD isn't the one prioritizing who we go after)I don't think JD would be able to do anything meaningful with them.

I think we’re looking at a lot of depth arms with our pickups to date with an eye to extend the pen (not exciting but okay, maybe there is a semblance of a plan). Curious as to who is truly fronting the recruiting coordination; not asking for an answer there.

I do think this kid is coming here (for his last year) to prove he’s a starter and I like that. Which day he starts will be evidence of the strength of the rotation but I still think we lose all three from 24 and I’m starting to think we lose Walters as well (part of the reason I chose to highlight your last statement and the other being that JD can’t **** up this kid, he is what he is and we’ll see if his stuff can play in ACC ball for starters’ innings or not).

That all aside, I am an optimist on this one, at least as the individual addition is concerned.

I got you, that’s fair.
