Reggie out?

What was our record without RJ? I hate to be mean, but this is perfect timing, IMO. Seems almost planned.

This year? 6-2. And in one of those losses we were absolutely obliterated inside by Arizona. And in the other we struggled against a smaller Indiana State team after Gamble quickly got in foul trouble and only logged 24 minutes.

Its time.

There's no conspiracy here. Dude needed surgery. He's not going to fly right after surgery. He'll try to be back this year. In the meantime, he has academics to deal with.

No he hasn't been giving us much, but we will miss him. Just having another body out there helps, especially if Kadji, Gamble and/or Jekiri get in foul trouble. Coach L was able to rest Kadji and Julian a lot during games since RJ has been back, and now that's going to be hard to do. Even though a lot of you have been asking for Tonye to get his minutes, or even saying Swoope can do it, it's still not good. We're not 10 deep, we can't afford anyone getting hurt.

There's a difference between RJ playing the way we hope he plays and what he has currently shown. He was an undeniable liability on Sunday. He could barely get up and down the court effectively.

Been saying this dude is playing hurt for a while now. This is a case where I hate to be right.

RJ, even playing hurt, was not a liability, even though he had rough patches. We literally have nobody else to play center. Someone has got to play, and asking Gamble to play 30+ minutes is nuts. You can't win in CBB with a 7-man rotation over extended periods of time. 8 players is barely squeaking by, but our starters are so good and well conditioned, we made it this far.

And big boy just shot up the top of the charts as one of my favorite players of all time. He probably needed surgery 2 months ago, and sacrificed himself to give us whatever he could. I ******* love that dude for what he did.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Miami center Reggie Johnson had surgery Tuesday to repair a minor meniscus issue, said a person familiar with the situation.

Johnson did not accompany the Hurricanes to Washington on Tuesday night, though could play in the Final Four if Miami wins the East Regional this weekend, the person told The Associated Press because the school did not publicly disclose the surgery.

Miami (29-6) plays Marquette (25-8) on Thursday in the East Regional semifinals. The winner of that game will meet either Indiana or Syracuse for a trip to Atlanta and the Final Four.

In a statement, the university said Johnson was injured in last weekend's third-round game against Illinois. It was not immediately clear when Johnson was hurt in that game, and he was in the contest with 15 seconds remaining.

He played 18 minutes in all against the Illini, and Miami won the game 63-59.

Johnson has appeared in 26 games for Miami this season, starting nine. The 6-foot-10, 292-pound senior is averaging 6.7 points and 4.8 rebounds for Miami, and his presence could have been a major help against Marquette, which has outrebounded its opponents by 4.5 per game this season.

Marquette also has 31 offensive rebounds in this year's NCAA tournament so far, third-best in the field behind Michigan State (34) and Gonzaga (32).

Johnson has not been a regular starter for Miami since mid-December. He started three Atlantic Coast Conference games in early March, before returning to his reserve role at the start of the ACC tournament.

Tonye plays center and is actually more productive in his short stints. Whether that continues over extended minutes will be the question. They trusted Swoope to play minutes in the ACC tourney final, he'll play some 4 when we go small. I think we'll be better defensively. Certainly more athletic. Reggie had devolved into a screen setter and double team drawer in the post. Something that benefited us because teams hadn't figured out that playing him straight up would have been enough. Losing a perimeter player would have been a bigger problem.

Reggie isn't a scorer anymore. Unless Swoope, Raph and Tonye blow assignments on defense and can't figure out when and where to set screens I'm not overly concerned. The moment being too big for them would be my only thing to worry about.

Kadji better man up and start rebounding

Kenny had 8 against Illinois. If you look at his game log since the Duke loss, he has put big numbers when he plays alot of minutes. 10,11,12,11,9 in games where he plays at least 30 minutes since Duke

The Sweet ******' Sixteen isn't the time or place to be hoping bench warmers don't get swallowed up by the moment. RJ served a significant purpose in the framework of this team, even as limited as he was. None of the other players who are taking his place are as experienced, skilled, or intelligent. If they were, they'd be playing instead of him the whole way through.

I know this will sound weird/dumb but I don't care about his numbers, he did not have a good rebounding game against Illinois. If he had 8, he should have had 15. He was lazy on box outs and gave UI a lot of offensive rebounds.

Had anyone noticed when RJ set screens, he would lean in, and most times not make any contact. Just something I noticed a few times recently.

What skills were you seeing from Reggie that Tonye is incapable of at this point? His experience will be missed. Maybe he won't panic in a situation that Tonye or Swoope might. He eats minutes at this point. He has no post game. The offense bogs down when they try to force the ball to him. He certainly isn't finishing any lobs off of penetration. Putting him in a pick and roll is a way to attack us. He has value, but its overstated. He is more intangibles than actual player at this point. Tonye is 35 games into his freshman season. I think he can handle an extra 5-7 minutes. Swoope as a rebounder, energy guy can give us 7-8 minutes if needed.

The team won't be more skilled but more energetic and athletic from a power position that wasn't giving us any scoring anyway.

Rebounding is a team thing. We went small for long stretches, switching everything to match their 3 pt shooters. One of which was a 6'9" guy. I'm not gonna put it all on Kenny. Rushing from the perimeter to try to check Egwu. Guards have to gang rebound in those situations.

I love Kenny (in a non-*** way...not that there's anything wrong with that) but he got beat...A LOT. I rewatched the game, saw it twice. He got lazy or floated away from the paint a lot, and his man beat him to offensive rebounds and tip outs all night long.

One thing to consider about Tonye getting more minutes is he gets a lot of fouls called on him (many that look like lack of respect calls from the refs) in the short amount of minutes he plays.
