Regarding our OL and running game

Uggggg didn’t WF “stop” us on 3rd/4th down multiple times? We had our worse 3rd/4th down hit rate against them last game. I get your overall point but we need to rediscover that mojo against the Cuse.

Edit: I meant the Ga Tech game not the WF game

We were 7/7 on 3rd down conversions against WF in 3rd and 3 or less situations. Didn't attempt a 4th down.

Even more maddening is that they rarely target JG with it yet he is one of the more dynamic WRs we’ve had in a while.

Special Teams malpractice that they haven’t let him field kickoffs and punts again. He has that change of speed/direction that is missing with the other guys. His run after catch on that screen against Wake was an example. Bunch of guys around him but nobody got a hand on him.
i agree
that JG should get more of the screens
but kickoff should by Lyle

So 83% on 3/4 and less than 4 running the ball. I think I remember maybe VT or Cal stopped us a couple times on 3rd but we picked it up on 4th. I could be wrong though. Regardless that is almost a guarantee on 3rd or 4th

Yeah I think 4 of the non-conversions on 3rd down runs were followed by a 4th down conversion, so 23/24 if you look at it that way.

It's also possible I missed some but that should be about right lol, I just went through drive charts since I'm refusing to do any work this afternoon

No, Wake did not stop us on multiple 3rd/4th downs. We didn't even attempt to go for it on 4th down. We were 0-0.

Wake did stop us twice when we had 1st and goal from the 3 yard line. We ran Martinez twice in a row. He got 2 yds on 1st down and no gain on 2nd down. Cam punched it in on 3rd and goal.

Now, we did have 3 punts in the game and Wake forced us to kick two FG's, so technically they stopped us on 3rd down at least 5 times, but none of those were 3rd and short situations.

Not sure where this false narrative of us getting stopped on 3rd n short/4th n short is coming from.

FG #1...We had 3rd n goal at Wake 7. Threw for TD, but got called back for penalty. Now 3rd and goal at Wake 22. Incomplete pass and we kicked FG

FG #2...3rd n goal at Wake 7. Cam threw for incomplete pass. Kicked FG on 4th down.

Punt # 1...3rd and 17 at Miami 35. Incomplete pass. Obvious punt on 4th

Punt # 2...3rd and 4 at Miami 10. Incomplete pass. Obvious put on 4th

Punt # 3...3rd and 6 at Wake 41. Incomplete pass. Didn't try for long FG. Punted instead.

Ohh I can't wait to see this one

Here's just the RB's

My thoughts:

2024 - 80% vs 2023 - 67% - Definite improvement, but I thought there'd be more of a gap
100% on 4th Down is great
Damien Martinez is the best - not surprising
Ajay Allen is 100% the last 2 years - Wow. DID NOT see that one coming

As things stand right now, I have a feeling Allen is hitting the portal. **** shame. He's a good one. But Fletcher looks good this season, as does Lyle. Next year there's going to be another all out battle for reps among RBs.

Yes I've already responded to the original poster on this. I was referring to the GT game not WF. Got the two mixed up but thanks for your response.

It's all good. I was typing my response when you had posted that you were referring to the GT game.

Even in the GT game, we did not get stopped on 3rd and short when running the ball. All the failed 4th down plays were passing plays.

You are correct though that our 3rd down and 4th down efficiency was terrible that game. We were 3-10 on 3rd down and 1-4 on 4th down.

Seven of the 3rd downs plays were 3rd and 5 or longer. All 7 of those were pass plays, only one resulting in a 1st down

The other three 3rd down plays were all run plays. Two of those 3rd downs were 3rd and 1. We ran the ball and got 1st down both times. The other 3rd down play was 3rd and 3. Martinez ran the ball for 2 yards. This led to the infamous 4th and 1 in which our coaches decided not to run for it, although we had not been stopped for less than 2 yards in any previous short yardage situation.

We barely use him.. Look at Brashard, stood on sideline and able to end his career playing. We can be selfish but no reason for talented kids to stand on sideline 90% of their upperclass career when they can get snaps in portal era.

I agree - I'd be very surprised if Allen doesn't hit the portal

I'm going to put this out there - IMO there's a decent chance Martinez returns (whether it's here or another school).

This is going to be a really, really deep RB draft. Martinez was pretty much a consensus Top 10 RB at the start of the season, but I'm seeing recent rankings with him just outside the Top 20.

I think you’re correct. I also don’t think he’ll stay at Miami for the same reasons Allen won’t stay. Too much competition for carries. Fletcher and Lyle will earn the right to be on the field. Johnson was looking much more college ready earlier this season so he may return, then there’s CWH and Pringle. Pringle looks college ready with a good offseason of S&C.

I think there's some validity to questions associated with the OL and the run game. I'm not going to delve into that.

Having said that, in short yardage situations, this is the best group we've had in relation to conversions. For years, we'd get stonewalled in the same situations we've converted this year.

The days of our OL and DL looking like a G5 unit are over IMO. No more 6’2” offensive tackles.

Gotcha. I was really just focusing in on the fact that we didn't deliver on 3rd/4th downs, which we had been leading the country in, and can't afford to do that against the Cuse. Not here to analyze every scenerio but this is what I'm specifically referring to; no more, no less. Rather you consider this shut down or no; this is what we did against GT and can't afford to repeat this again. That's my point.

Miami 3-10 3rd downs
Miami 1-4 4th downs
*Info I pasted did not come out as expected

Wow, never thought Martinez might return. He told Fletcher this would be his last year but his stock has dropped.

So I'm with Grover, I think Martinez hits the portal if he stays for another year. Wouldn't mind Martinez coming back at Miami
