Corner skills in a safeties body.

In the pro game, a player of his skill set in today's NFL would be playing inside taking full advantage of his positional versatility, size, and natural football ability while also putting him out on the edge. In college, he could be a nice boundary corner or play safety, both with great efficacy.

I think he'll immediately contribute on special teams and he'll be in the mix getting tons of playing time by the end of his freshman season.

If I put together a little Top X list like ol Petey Pab did of SoFla players, I would have put Artie Burns #2 behind Matthew Thomas. He's got that first round potential.

I love the idea of playing him in the slot at CB where he can blitz and be used in coverage.

I think Burns can be a corner for us here. He may end up being a safety in the league like Antrel Rolle, but he can definitely be an all-american corner here for us.

He has the size and willingness to be a physical corner and athleticism to be a cover corner.
 
If our front can get some pressure, our defense is gonna be fun to watch. This guy has blanket corner written all over him IMO. I am sure he could play safety as well. Wasn't his first defended play at the UA practice a pick six? Our db depth has skyrocketed the past two classes. :stormwarning:

One thing is for sure is that he will be a special teams monster. He has the speed and aggression for every coverage unit and he can return. He also blocked multiple kicks in high school.

I remember another fearless dude who played DB with great speed taking over special teams here--Tremain Mack. Some guys have a knack for blocking kicks and making plays on STs, and Mack was the ultimate at that.

We haven't had a difference maker like that on ST's in quite some time.

Wouldn't mind seeing him with a role like Charles Woodson had in GB at the beginning of the season where he basically played both safety and corner, although that could be tough on a young player.

Pretty much sums up my view. I'd add that, in some of the Cover 3 looks D'Ono relies on, Burns is exactly the type of Corner you want making that tackle for a 5 yard gain. You know, the one that was turned into a 15 yard gain 3rd down after 3rd down this year.

Enough times, but especially 2011. He's shown (tried) basically everything. He showed a good amount of 4 across this year, too. Both are dependent on DBs who can close quickly and tackle well.

Lol that's hilarious. You don't even know how many times I have went back & re-watched games & missed that every time. I have every game aired on DVR.

Having that speed & athleticism back there is really going to show out once we get the defensive line problem fixed.

We played a single high safety early in his tenure and the seams (because we haven't had a good Safety around here in a long time...until Bush) got destroyed. Seriously, I'm not a D'Onofrio guy because he plays a different style than I appreciate, but he's been dealing with a perfect storm of bad situations: trying to transition to a type of defense that relies on strength up front, while not having any strength up front. In the back of the defense, he's mostly thrown everything at the wall.
 
For the record, I hope Burns starts out at corner as well. I like the corners we brought in last year but none of them have the size/speed that Burns possesses. Plus I think he can get on the field earlier there.

If he ends up being the best cover CB then sure. If he isnt, he has no business being in the slot.
