RB targets

Not counting on Martinez coming back, but that’d be a blessing. If he doesn’t though, we definitely need a back, and not just some scrub body either.

Ya I just consider it a wrap for Martinez but man it would be awesome if he came back. Total stud from October on for us.

IMO, people have misevaluated Fletcher since high school.

If you evaluate him as a pure runner, he's merely above-average. But if you look at him like an all-purpose back, he's got a unique skillset at 6'2, 230.

He pass protects better than anybody (which is the majority of the snaps), he converts short-yardage, he can lead block (watch when he lines up next to Martinez), and he rarely takes a loss with a healthy 5+ yards per carry.

Think Alonzo Highsmith instead of Willis McGahee.
... You just described a FB.

We just gave him 100+ carries.

We shouldn't give our FB 100 carries. He doesn't make any plays that aren't there basically. Dude doesn't make anyone miss, and barely breaks any tackles. He falls forwards when he goes down. Okay thats nice. He isn't often LOSING yards, which is good. Him as a person and leader in the locker room is separate from his on field ability. Okay he can block. That's cool, but he isn't a weapon out of the backfield, so we shouldn't want him in on 3rd downs too often. Having them there just to pass block would be a tell. Him being in during 2 min drills or in clear passing situations was painful. Martinez was so clearly better in those situations. I'm perfectly happy having him in the backfield anytime we are running a 2 rb set. In fact that seems to be when he is at his best BECAUSE he is capable of running just fine, but can be that blocker like you said.

He was our 4th best RB this season. 3rd if you want to be nice and give him the edge over Allen. Martinez > Lyle > Allen/Fletcher > CJ jr

South Alabama RB Fluff Bothwell
South Alabama running back Fluff Bothwell tells On3 that he’s scheduled a trip to Cincinnati, Arizona and Louisville this week. Auburn, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Ole Miss have also shown interest. The No. 3 running back in the On3 Industry Transfer Ranking, he’s aiming to make a decision before Christmas.
On3 needs to fix that player link

I would get an ***-kicking blocking TE for cheap and move Lofton to a primary backfield role. Georgia Tech got Jackson Hawes from Yale and he's probably going to get drafted.

Lofton can really run and he's a matchup nightmare in the backfield.
I'm not sure I'd be able to think of one thing Fletcher could do at RB that Lofton couldn't as well or better....

A FB who averaged 5.4 yards per carry. And dominated on short-yardage. And never took TFLs. And wore down the defense because he was so physical, allowing guys like Allen to pop big runs against dead defenses in the 4th.

That's a weapon that every team would kill to have. It's no coincidence he played so many snaps on the best offense in America.

We were never behind the chains, which was a big reason we were the best third down team in America by a mile. For comparison, Cam's Wazzu team was 51st in the nation on 3rd down with great receivers. Look at what happened when Lyle came in and took a 2-yard loss immediately against Syracuse.

And I couldn't disagree more with Fletcher not playing passing downs. He's bigger and more physical than the blitzers. Of course you want him protecting Cam. It's not a tell because he can catch, too (11 yards per reception). Again, we were the best third down team in America by a mile with Fletcher playing a ton of third downs.

I'm good with Lyle taking Martinez's snaps because he's a special runner. But you don't cut Fletcher's snaps. He's the type of runner we've been seeing in January for years, a winner, and a complete player.

Best path would be a little electric scat back that’s fast as **** and returns kicks and/or punts and plays on 3rd down passing downs

They don’t demand a lot of money or carries
Looks like this is the route we're looking with the offer to Lloyd Avant. Not a huge back, unsure of his speed though.

He's top 10 in the country in kick return average and housed 1 as a freshman.

Its a body in the room, just in case, with a role on STs. I like the offer.

They were ****ting on the offer in the transfer portal thread. First thing I looked up was his KR avg. 34.6

Martinez needs to go. he's an RB, they dont have great shelf life.
The good thing about nil money just depends on how much he’s making in the pros compared to college . Add insurance to the nil deal it might benefit to stay

“That was amazing getting that offer from Miami because I watched them growing up,” Avant told CaneSport. “It’s a great school for development and a great school to get an opportunity to play at a high level. Coach Merritt wanted to offer me because he just had two running backs who just entered the portal, and they needed some depth in the running back room. I feel like it would be a great fit for me to come in and develop one year and play in my next year.”

With Miami likely to return sophomore running back Mark Fletcher, standout freshman Jordan Lyle, and potentially junior Damien Martinez next fall, the Hurricanes running back room is loaded from top to bottom. Despite that, Lloyd, who rushed for 259 yards and a touchdown on 79 carries, isn’t shying away from competition and would be willing to work his way up the Canes depth chart if need be.

“I love that, and I’m a competitor myself coming from Texas high school football,” Avant said. “All I know is competition and competing, and I just want to get developed as a player.”

“I’m definitely going to get there for a visit,” Avant said. “Me and coach Merritt are trying to get it finalized, and it will be sometime next week.”

“I’ll be looking for a home environment, a great offensive line coach, and a team that runs the ball well,” Avant said. “Just guys who want to win a championship.”

Thus far, he sees all of those things in Miami. The Texas native will have three years of eligibility remaining.

I was thinking Mario could augment the RB room with a Travis Dye type all-purpose back and Avant fits the bill. Didn't see any individual Tulsa film but here is footage from last year.

Sounds like a Cane
