Randy Shannon to Arkansas?

This dude's a mush. Everywhere he goes turns to ****. When's the last time TCU lost as many games as they did this year? Gary Patterson bought that mush's ticket out of town.
I hate that **** goblin as much as the next guy, but defense was the least of their problems this year. Still ranked in the top 20 nationally against much stiffer competition than they are used to.

Congrats on your teams' win in the Pinstripe Bowl.

He's a mush. His mush factor has nothing to do with either side of the football. He had as much impact on TCU's defensive performance this year as you did.

As stated previously, the NCAA should include the Shannvo Era as part of self-imposed sanctions. The NCAA should allow us to sign more kids than other schools to make up the ground we lost in the 4 years of Shannvo probation.

As far as the contention that Shannvo wasn't "ready" to be a head coach, that is funny to me. Shannon was anti-social and lazy. Those two traits don't work very well in a HFC. Unless he can overcome those deficiencies in his personality, he'll never be ready to be a HFC.

Randy was a pretty decent head coach as long as you don't look at his recruiting record, player development, media relations, game management, staff/player relationships, and overall leadership skills.

Shannon is not a good coach. Period.

He's certainly not a good head coach. I'm as furious about the job he did here as HC as much as anyone, but lets not get emotional.

He was he national assistant of the year as a DC (yes, I know he had world class talent) and was well regarded when he was the LB coach with the NFL's Miami Dolphins.

If his head is on straight, and his ego is in check, it's a good hire at LB coach. You're getting a proven NFL guy at the position, a guy with success at coordinator, a lot of experience. I'm sure Beliema checked into how he was regarded this past year at TCU and he checked out.

He was a great player and assistant here. I wish him well, except when he's recruiting against us. Then he can diaf:)

For someone who is a "proven NFL guy at a position" (that's a stretch, by the way) and a "national assistant of the year as a DC," why is he bouncing around mid-level programs as a position coach? Seriously, that doesn't raise some significant red flags?

I don't think that's a stretch. I knew a few people there at the time through a work thing and he was well regarded. Remember that he was promoted internally when he was with the Dolphins, from a defensive asst to full time LB coach. JJ also vouched for him based on the job he did for the Fins.

And I don't think he's "bouncing around" as you said. Working under Patterson at TCU is no small gig, and then going to a good SEC staff? Those are good programs. And he most certainly improved his stature and no doubt his salary with this move, and has only made one move.

That said, I certainly agree with you that there are some red flags. Which is why he hasn't gotten a coordinator let alone a HC offer. He's certainly set himself back, as deservedly so. But as a LB coach? I think that's a great get, especially since you're not the Guinea Pig for his return to coaching as he just had a successful year at TCU.

@BFeldmanCBS: Good pick-up for Arkansas & Bret Bielema landing Randy Shannon as LB coach. Quite a staff Bielema has assembled.

So Randy Shannon, based on the people you met through a work thing, was a well-regarded NFL LB coach (by none other than Jimmy Johnson and his coaching tree types), yet voluntarily, 12 years later and with a lot more "experience," decides to take multiple college LB coach positions? Let's be real here, man. The proof is in the reality of it all: if Randy Shannon were anything close to a legitimate NFL LB coach, he'd be more likely to be an NFL LB coach than a college LB coach. Sure, you may say he "prefers the college game and just wants to get back into a top position," but this is now his second position coach job in college.

He can be the greatest LB coach in the history of college (he won't be, because he's a notoriously poor technical teacher, as many, many former players can attest), and it'd all look extremely weird to me anyway. Why? Because the guy was an NFL LB coach, defensive coordinator for the top team in College, and a college head coach.

In short, I think the market has spoken as to what it thinks about Randy Shannon's value. Forgive me if I don't have a soft spot for a guy that, intentionally or not, contributed to a deep wound this program is still recovering from.

RS was with the dolphins for 3 years and only 1 as a LB coach. I can't argue hearsay. "I heard he was well regarded." What is the source? As LU said, if he was so well regarded then and has far more leadership experience now...why doesnt he have an NFL position coach job?

Here are the facts....All 4 head coaches prior to Coker leaped directly into professional HC jobs in the NFL. Schnelly (USFL at the time), JJ, Erickson, and Butch. If you look back at their coaching staffs, a large percentage of them all ended in OC/DC/HC jobs in college and NFL...the list is enormous...Chud, Pagano, Wannstedt, Tuberville, Schiano, Campo, Bratkowdki, Lubbick, Tressman...etc. Coaching at Miami is like working at Goldman Sachs...built-in competitive advantages and a rich history of turning out top tier talent.

Coker took the titanic and turned it towards the ice berg and Shannon steeped on the throttle and crashed us head on. Look at Shannons staff...
Whipple - NFL QB coach. Went back to his old job.
Lovett - DB Coach at Texas Tech
Aubrey Hill - WR coach at Florida and now out of coaching due to NCAA investigation
Clint Hurtt - DL coach at Louisville
Wesley McGriff - DB at Vandy
Stoutland - OL coach at Bama
Pannunzio - Football Operations - out of coaching
Tommie Robinson - Arizona Cardinals RB coach
Michael Barrow - LB coach at UM
Rick Petri - DL coach at Duke

The only success Shannon had was his 2008 recruiting class and it isn't like he barnstormed the country and cherry picked the top talent in the country. He convinced a bunch of kids from the Miami area to stay home. After that one year...every recruiting class he had **** the bed. He assembled a terrible staff and you all know the rest of the story. Our program went from a record 1st round draft picks in the early part of the decade to not having one 1st rounder since 2008 and only 2 2nd round picks in that time! At MIAMIIIIIIIII. That is awful. His only success to date was at the DC at Miami and he inherited one of the most talented and deep defenses in the country from Butch Davis staff. He didn't come in and innovate or run a complicated defense. He came in a ran a very vanilla 4-3 defense and the ridiculous talent inherited made plays.

The college and pro coaching marketplace right now is the ultimate free market and their is consistent high turnover. 7 NFL coaches just were fired in the NFL. Cant even count the number of HC and coordinators who are bouncing around in college. And now, Shannon 3 years later is moving to Arkansas to be a LB coach? That tells you all you need to know about what his industry thinks about him.

Not sure, what's up with your selective comprehension, Lu.

As I said and you ignored: "There are some red flags... he certainly set himself back." That's manifesting itself in why he is a LB coach right now and not a coordinator or HC. Plenty of coaches get fired, but take one small step down to coordinator or a lesser quality HC position. Randy has to deal with the fact that he was a terrible leader as a HC, and really left the program in shambles. Add in the fact that the NCAA is currently investigating a ton of stuff that went on under his regime, and he's damaged goods. So yeah man, I'm being "real."

As far as his time at the Dolphins, we can argue all day about what I know or what you know, or what anyone thinks, but the FACT is that after working two years as a defensive assistant there, in the NFL, he was well regarded enough and his work lauded enough that they PROMOTED him to their full time LB coach, and JJ gave UM a glowing review of him when consulted. You don't promote people who aren't doing well.

As for you not having a soft spot for the guy... I don't blame you. I don't. I just objectively am grateful for the contributions he made to our 1987, 1991 and 2001 National Championships, and I'm furious as a mother ****** for the job he did here as a HC. Not because he failed, coaches lose sometimes. But because of the approach and attitude he took to managing the program, both on the field and on the recruiting trail, and because of the irreparable harm it did to the program.

His ignoring recruiting his last season here was definitely intentional

He was also smug and rude as **** for a guy that did such a terrible job

I have no idea why he gets so much support and credit from others.

Who is giving him an support or any credit for anything he did as HC here? Names please. I'd like to test them for DBC syndrome.

It must have been **** near impossible to go into a recruits home and speak to the kids parents about education at Miami when he has a hard time putting complete sentences together. He did not represent the university well in many ways but public speaking was a nightmare. He will never be more than a LB coach and he is not fooling anyone in the college coaching world as we can all see from everyones lack of interest in him as a DC or head coach.

Dude, his lack of communication skilled KILLED me from day 1. Beyond it being a pet peeve of mine, its a ******* joke when your CEO can't speak English.

Because he did so much damage to his brand while a HC here. Anti-social, polarizing, incredibly poor leadership skills, and a current NCAA investigation. Not sure what the argument is here. He's damaged goods, which is why he is only getting LB offers, positions out of the limelight, with no staff below you. I don't care what he does for the next 20 years, I wouldn't hire him as a HC, nor would anyone else. And he has a lot to prove to earn a DC position which is going to be hard, because of the baggage I mentioned above.

As an LB coach? Some might not want anything to do with him, while others, including some very well respected guys like Patterson at TCU and Biliema at ARK see a bargain as LINEBACKER COACH, nothing more for now. I get that. That's all.

LULZ at him being "well regarded" as the LB corch of the Dolphins. What the fugg does that even mean, and where were these opinions expressed?

He was promoted when he was with the Dolphins, and furthermore JJ told UM that he was doing good work there.

JJ also said Wannstache was the best corch he's ever been around. JJ also lauded Shannvo as UM's head corch. I take what he says publicly with a boulder of salt.

As for the promotion, that doesn't prove much aside from the Fins needing a LB corch and moving Shannvo up to the position. He got promoted here too. What did that prove?

Fair enough, if you choose to not take JJ at his word, and think he would saddle the U with a DC that would cause harm deliberately, that's your choice.

As for the Fins, he was PROMOTED. You don't promote a guy because you need to fill a position. There are thousands of guys out there who would kill for the position of a NFL position coach. You don't promote a guy who is stinking it up. You promote a guy only if they are doing a good job and you hold them in high regard. That goes for the world, and its a clearly logical conclusion.

Look, I get its hard to say anything nice about Shannon for some people who can't take the emotion out of conversation, but I understand why two very well respected HC's like Patterson and Beleima would want a former NCAA National Coordinator of the Year and a former NFL LB coach to coach their college LB's. Yeah, you have to make sure he's sincerely into it (obviously he was at TCU as ARK stole him away) but if he is, you're getting a bargain.

How would I let him be HC of the Liberty City Optimist Team? NOPE!

I notice you glossed over the part about JJ singing the praises if Wannstache as the best corch he's EVER been around and praising Shannvo while he was the HC here. You can go ahead and take what he says publicly seriously. Not smart.

You also skipped right over the fact that Shannvo got promoted here. So did Coker. You act like promotions are alway a sign that someone is doing great work or is qualified for the higher gig. Again, not a wise assumption.

I didn't gloss over it at all. In fact, I said "fair enough" right off the bat and said you are welcome to come to your own decision. I guess you glossed over that part:-) You might also recall that JJ also said he drafted Shannon to the Cowboys to basically help coach the young LBs there. That's certainly more than lip service, but again, you are welcome to come to your own conclusions.

People get promoted and either fail or succeed at their new challenge. It doesn't reflect on the fine job they were doing beforehand that earned them that promotion. Randy did well at the NFL Dolphins as an asst working with the LB's and as LB coach. He did well at UM as a DC where he was NCAA National Coordinator of the Year. I, as well as Beliema and Patterson (not sure there is a defensive coach I respect more BTW) believe that makes him either qualified or a downright steal as a college LB coach. Nothing more. He was promoted to HC at Miami and failed miserably. It takes nothing away from his ability to coach LB's at the college level.

I do appreciate you giving me permission to arrive at my own decision. I am grateful for that.
