It's not so much of a me move as it is a smart move.
Dude has everything to lose and nothing to gain by playing in a meaningless bowl game.
If I'm Rambo's coach. I tell him to sit it out and let the young guns get that burn. Bro, I'd agree with you if we were talking about Rambo sitting out of a playoff game or a national title game but we're talking about the Sun Bowl. That's about as meaningless of a bowl game as it gets.Smart move, sure, i get that. Odds of some career ending injury, slim though.
It's most certainly a me move though. You've hit teammates out there who won't be going on to the NFL. They have nothing else to gain either and are playing for pride as well as their teammates. These same teammates put on for Rambo and any other sitout through every practice and game.
Maybe you're the difference if you play. This will be the last game a lot of them play and you could've sent them out with a win. Nah, you chose to sit out though.
I'm telling you man, if I'm a coach, it's a knock on a player. It shows what kind of teammate they are. It shows how much they care about the institution they suited up for. It doesn't mean they're some scumbag soulless person, but it's not a good look.
And if you were a top 10 player and headed to the pros. Would you risk it all to play in a meaningless bowl game?I get not playing in a bowl if you are a projected top 10 pick. But he might only play a handful of football games for the rest of his life. Not trying to be negative and I hope he succeeds… but a lot of these kids skip out on bowl games, spend the next few years on a practice squad, play half of a season of Canadian football and decide to hang it up.
As a former college athlete (albeit with no shot of going pro) I can’t imagine voluntarily sitting out one of my last few games. For every kid who got hurt in a bowl game there are 10 kids who played, balled out and then went on to success at the next level. That mindset is a strong indicator of the guys who ultimately make it. A lot of the blame can be directed towards their advisors/agents who don’t want to risk their meal tickets… I digress
I don't agree with this. I understand the thought process but let me ask it to you this way. Would you give up 100's of thousands to potentially several millions of dollars to play in a bowl game sponsored by a mayonnaise company? I highly doubt you would. If this was for a NY6 bowl game, sure. However, the risk is not worth the reward of "hey Ryan Ragone, I hope you nothing but the best with that UM degree and I wanted to risk a whole lot to play with you one more time."Smart move, sure, i get that. Odds of some career ending injury, slim though.

You are correct about El Paso being dangerous. That guy went crazy a few years back and was killing people in the Wal-mart. My recollection is that he was targeting Hispanics. Not a safe place to be as a minority. The Bowl Game is meaningless and El Paso is a dangerous border town in the present environment. Good Mexican food doe. I Wouldn’t want to go there either.

Amd if he blows out his knee like king did last year, would we say it was worth it for the sun bowl?I hear you and it's just a difference of opinion.
Even if it's meaningless in the grand scheme of things, it's still a game and the last game for many. It isn't meaningless for those guys, everyone wants to go out with the W.
No coach is telling a marquee player to sit out. They want to win and are paid to do so.

Better to tear a knee in the league than playing a game known for the Mexican border and backpack gift bagsNo, but that's a chance every time you strap up. I listed other reasons that supercede this IMO.
Just a generational thing maybe. Nobody during mine would've sat out like this while their brothers went to work for a win.
jake butts career basically ended in the orange bowl. Even ny6 ain’t worth it. Playoff or bustI don't agree with this. I understand the thought process but let me ask it to you this way. Well said. I agree.jake butts career basically ended in the orange bowl. Even ny6 ain’t worth it. Playoff or bust

Why play at all, ever?I don’t even care if our returning starters don’t play at all in a 5th rate bowl after what happened to king. Is anyone willing to risk an injury to TVD or Rooster for the godaddy bowl?
He should’ve definitely played but at the end of the day who cares. It’ll be nice to audition the young receivers.
Started that post off by heavily implying that I would understand skipping a bowl game if you're a projected top 10 pickAnd if you were a top 10 player and headed to the pros. Would you risk it all to play in a meaningless bowl game?
Where do you draw the line? Why play in a spring scrimmage? Why finish a mediocre second half of a season? Is your only goal to get a set amount of game tape? Why not just get some peeps to film you working out? If your only goal is you, do you even need a team?Exactly. A meaningless bowl is nothing more than the first spring scrimmage to me. If you are in a marquee game or are playing for 10 wins or something, ok. But if it's the 7-5 bowl, start prepping for next year by getting more tape on the young kids.
It’s like pornography. Hard to describe, but I know it when I see it.Where do you draw the line? Why play in a spring scrimmage? Why finish a mediocre second half of a season? Is your only goal to get a set amount of game tape? Why not just get some peeps to film you working out? If your only goal is you, do you even need a team?
Man cut it out . You’re sitting here saying there’s no difference between Rambo, who when he first came here had only what, one full season on tape (?) and something still to prove to scouts, him skipping a spring scrimmage and half a mediocre season is the same as skipping a meaningless bowl game at the end of the season ? A season in which he put a great year on tape and is headed to the NFL in months ?Where do you draw the line? Why play in a spring scrimmage? Why finish a mediocre second half of a season? Is your only goal to get a set amount of game tape? Why not just get some peeps to film you working out? If your only goal is you, do you even need a team?
