Question re scholarship reductions

Seems like Miami is getting more scholarships since we were down to 75....... if thats the case and Miami gets 82, that's 7 additional scholarships.

So we got a scholarship addition sanction :rollcanes:

Don't forget -

"The institution shall reduce the total number of athletics awards during each academic year. The institution has the option of assigning the reductions during those years."

UM could do 1, 1, then 7, etc.

Also note that only the total number is reduced, not initial counters. UM can take full classes as long as enough players leave each year so that 9 over 3 comes about (by any combination).

Don't think we have any self imposed, we just have a small senior class and Golden is making room for the incoming class. By my count we only go down 14 players. We will sign a fairly sizeable class, some of whom will count against last year, and be back up to 82 for next year, when, according to the report, the scholarship reductions start.

The encouraging thing is we have proven we can play with fewer than 85. I think the light numbers this year are just the result of the lingering effects of roster mismanagement in the past.

Is that quote from the report? I thought the NCAA was specifying 3 in each of the next three years.

The good thing is that this is where Golden is at his best. He's the ultimate CEO.

82 isn't bad at all. I don't think we've been at 85 for years now anyways

Last year we were at 79-81 (somewhere in there).

This is no big deal at all (-3). I had a post about this awhile ago. It just requires one to be more efficient with each available scholarship.

The first year (-3) will have no effect. You take 3 less kids, possibly a project. Remember every year there are redshirts, even though we’re at 75 we’re on pace to redshirt 4 players. Those 3 players, could have been redshirt players or not. They could have been studs or possibly transferred.

They would be able to come to work-out and learn the playbook, instead they are not on the team. So in year two, even though they’re redshirt freshman possibly getting in on special teams, possibly on the two deep. In order to stay at -3, we make sure the total scholarships we accept doesn’t put us over 82.

The third year, those 3 kids could be starters, on the two deep or just players waiting for burn. The effects are negligible when it is -3.

We can sign a full class each year of sanctions. The sanctions do not limit initial counters. As long as enough players leave so that we lose 9 total scholarships over 3 years (by any combination), there is no issue.

The penalty is not 3 per year for 3 years. It is 9 fewer than the total scholarship allotment (with no limit on initial counters) spread out over 3 years any way the university wants, as long as there is some reduction in each of the 3 years.

I quoted from the report. 3 over each of the next 3 is incorrect.

According to the NCAA report, UM never self imposed scholly reductions. So the 3 per reduction will be the first and only scholly reduction we face. I think Golden just prepped the roster for worse case scenario. Now he can actually add some players.

From the public report.

Football Program
3. Reduction in Athletics Awards. The total number of athletically related
financial aid awards in football shall be reduced by a combined total of nine
during the 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years. The institution shall
reduce the total number of athletics awards during each academic year. The
institution has the option of assigning the reductions during those years
.

Like Dapper said, it's not 3 for 3. It's 9 , and you can distribute them as you like over that 3 years, as long as there is some reduction in each of the years.

It's no big deal at all.

Anyone with a 3.0 gpa or a 20 on the ACT give them academic scholarships.

We skated. :crownpour:

Miami’s scholarship reductions are only in *overall* counters, not initial counters. So they can still enroll full recruiting classes.

Start in 2014-2015 (i.e. the 2015 Class)

nope, 2014.

The report says 2014-2015. That would be the 2015 Class. Is it academic years? Whatever, so at 75 now we still could give those ships away to get to 82.

yea, its academic. i looked this up a few weeks ago when researching other programs penalties, timelines, and when exactly the classes have to start being reduced. it would have been our 2014 class coming in that would have been limited. but that doesnt even matter now as only our 85 total are being reduced.
