When Artie Burns is wrapping up his Miami career in 2016, is there a chance he can be representing the United States in the 110-meter hurdles? How do his times stack up, and will his football career stymie his development?

Not a track and field guy, but it's a trick question because he should already be in an NFL training camp by that point.

I think EastFan over in the WeZ is one of our resident track & field guys. Not sure how often he ventures onto the recruiting board though.

110 metre hurdles is really competitive. Artie is an elite athlete but he would need to dedicate all of his time to make the olympic team.

He would/will make infinitely more money in the NFL.

He's ran the best time in the nation last year as a Junior, and it was the 6th fastest all-time for a high schooler...on top of that it was run into a 1.4 headwind. I'd saw his chances are pretty good if he dedicated himself. I doubt he will though.

Like anything to be the best in the world its a fulltime gig as others who are on his heels now will be grinding for those four years with specialized attention. He seems to have the elite raw talent to excel there but its not something you drop and pick up, Im sure he will run at um tho

I think you mean the best time for a junior.

He ran 13.35 which was the 31st fastest time last year regardless of age......still pretty **** amazing. The fastest 3 times overall were all under 13 seconds.....and throughout history, its rare for guys to run 12 point something. Artie would need to take up track full time if he wants to be competitive.

No. In order to really make the trials for the olympics, you have to be training for it full time. While football trains athletes for speed, it's just not the same as how track and field sprinters do it. I suppose technically it's possible, but the chances are incredibly slim.

Until he goes to college and prove he is an elite hurdler at the college level, it is hard to predict.
HS hurdles' height is lower than college/pro hurdles. So you can't compare times. However, my son who is on the track team at UM and anticipates the arrival of Mr. Burns, thinks he is a "beast" and could very well hold the HS record before he arrives at Miami.
Bottom line is, he has "the potential" to be an Olympian if he is dedicated to track full time, which is not the case because he wants to play football.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Demps make the Olympics (and medal) as a full-time football player?

Actually fastest period....for a high schooler.

Got a medal for running in the prelims on the relay team. He also took the year off from football to do it.

Demps ran 10.01 in the 100m.....while in high school. That was a world junior record IIRC. He was just a freak and an obvious outlier.

Was Jon Capel still on the team when he made the Olympic team? Or did he quit to focus on it? It's been so long I can't remember the specifics.

No he didn't. He played four years at UF, graduated in 2011, sat out the draft, went in the supplemental draft and would've played for the Patriots this year if he didn't get hurt.

Burns may have more pro potential than Demps, but he can still go in the top two rounds as a supplemental prospect assuming his play warrants that grade.

He didnt miss a year but he missed time from the end of the season until after the Olympics. I guess 6-7 months or so.

Sorry, so he took 8 months off....still didn't do it as a full time football player.

Demps was more of a freak than Burns when it comes to track, and hurdling is completely different than regular sprints. There is so much more technique-wise that goes into hurdles, they really aren't comparable events.
