The clear cut right answer is that unless Heaps is just a disaster and Kaaya is so amazingly better, Heaps is going to start. No coach in his right mind is going to throw a true Frosh into the fire the first game, when the kid wasnt even an EE, if he has any other option.
Kaaya has looked phenomenal so far. But when the bullets start flying, it can be a whole different ballgame. He obviously has the tools, and great poise, but Heaps has years of starting experience, reading defenses, calling audibles, being able to adjust plays, players, dealing with the pressure, etc. Those are intangibles that can affect games and the performance of a QB. Its almost unheard of for a true Frosh to come in and really excel right out of the gate. At a MINIMUM, the staff would want to ease kaaya into things, get him a few series per game, let him get his feet wet, before starting him outright. **** I dont know why everyone assumes that Kaaya would WanT to start right off the bat. Maybe he's not comfortable yet. Maybe he doesnt feel he's got command of the offense yet.
Heaps has years or experience and can manage an offense. He may not light it up, but thats clearly not what AG is primarily concerned with to start off. He wants a mature QB who can manage the offense, move the sticks and not make mistakes. It will clearly be better for EVERYONE, Kaaya included, if Heaps is at least able to start the season well enough for us, and then let Kaaya work his way in and get his legs under him, before he's forced into the fire.
