They really do not have any real laurels to rest on since we haven’t seen a game yet, but if you mean the hype, then you are certainly correct. Lots of movement and action. The OC pick is proving to be as exciting as I thought it would be and Manny moved decisively on the whole portal thing.

Funny, our defensive coordinator takes over and after a few weeks I feel better about our quarterback room than I did when it was being led by, "a legend since the 1990s." 🤯

I didn't "dig into" his life. His sister came across my TL. I didn't go out of my way to see if he had a sister.

Arm Mechanics Will need to work on a consistent repeated delivery. Will drop arm to generate power then other times will bypass power base position all together.

Mobility Is zone read capable and shows numerous big play runs at the high school level. With modest weight gain can easily factor in the QB power concepts. Has great awareness in the pocket and senses the pressure well. Can extend the pocket naturally and shows the trait repeatedly on film.

Off platform throw out of necessity due to linebacker pressure. Matocha shows the ability to adapt and instinctively will sacrifice "perfect mechanics" in order to deliver a strike on time.



Red Zone play with anticipation. Matocha notes the man coverage and delivers the ball once his receiver easily beats his press corner. Great ball placement for six.



Red zone play with primary read taken away. Matocha shows the ability to change quickly and throw from and alternate base once again.

Facing a blitz and pressure, Matocha takes a shot and still throws a perfect pass for the touchdown.


Roman Rank: Matocha was made a priority by coach Enos and it is easy to see why. Matocha has certain things you can't teach. His ability to sense pressure, adapt on the fly and his overall improvisational skills lead him to make plays other quarterbacks simply cannot. He is a mobile guy and he can bail out an OC in a blink. That helps. I like when my quarterback shows the ability to adapt when things can't be perfect. That includes the offensive coordinator.

Ultimately I think Matocha will need to improve mechanically. Both with his footwork and his arm slotting you see a variable nature that is in definite need of refinement. Is he a kid that falls in the howitzer class of quarterbacks that can make every throw on the field? No. But the good news is, he has the ability to improve that with a collegiate strength and development program and a proper throwing mechanic analysis. I still would say Matocha is a natural thrower of the football. This isn't something where mechanically he is dead locked with no room to improve. He most certainly can.

Former quarterback coach Jon Richt essentially said they would not take another quarterback after missing out on Michael Johnson Jr. last year. Enos understands the importance of the most important position on the field. (Sorry other position groups) You will have attrition after spring. There is absolutely no way around this one. You can see it developing from a mile away. So Matocha is the perfect candidate to improve under Enos and potentially emerge in a prime position to challenge for the starting job one day. This a current QB2 that in time can be a QB1 who shows plenty of QB1

Based on the reel it looks as if this kid WANTS to push ball down the field. I like the aggressiveness. He has a back in the flat on MANY of these plays wide open and could be a check down Charlie if he wanted but he buys time with mobility and seems to want to get ball down the field. Do you see that as a big positive or is it questionable?

Great breakdown in film. Love how this kid anticipates and can improvise on the move. Keeps eyes downfield. Can identify blitzes. Throws his man open to get YAC. You're right, footwork needs work, needs some arm mechanic refinering, but nothing Coach Enos can't do. We will see.

Thanks for the insight Roman. Anyone, what is Roman's background? Was he a QB coach somewhere? Serious question, have seen many of his write ups, very detailed. Just wondering what his background is.

Former st thomas aquinas qb, former professional baseball player. Avid film lover. Consider myself a student of the game.
