QB Talk

I like Edouard and Flowers. I think we are serious on both of them. Treon Harris, I think we are going to try, but he was pretty serious about wanting to play QB, oregon/clemson fight there. Mahalak, remember that was Fisch's kid. Not sure if Coley goes after him.

Morgan Mahalak

I need an explanation on this kid because he didn't start this year, please tell me why people want him based on what he has done (not what could be).

Production and Competition are overrated when it comes to evaluating QB's (I think they're overrated when it comes to evaluating prospects on the whole, but that's neither here nor there). There are too many variables that could contribute to poor production from a QB and the competition level doesn't do anything for a QB, because it's not like QB's are in 1-on-1 matchups. You can see arm strength, accuracy, anticipation, and the ability to read defenses in 7-on-7 or in shorts and a T-Shirt throwing the passing skeleton. The only you might get a better sense of, is the QB's footwork in the pocket during a regular game, when the rush is on.

In regards to Mahalak, he has an above average arm (not S. Mo strong, but **** strong), good mechanics (holds the ball high), solid release, and pretty good footwork. Seems that he has received QB instruction that the guys in Florida don't really receive and is closer to reaching his potential, than a guy like Alin, who is only scratching the surface. I don't think he's going to be running around like Johnny Football, but he is a pretty good athlete and could scramble for some first downs if the defense doesn't pay him any attention (Sam Bradford quality athlete). Personally, I like him better than any of our other QB targets, because I feel like he's the surest thing, while guys like Alin and the Bush kid from Georgia have some bust potential. He somewhat looks like the QB's that Brian Kelly used to have at Cincy and reminds me most of Dan Lefevour, from Western Michigan a couple years ago.

I loved Sean White's film, specifically his instincts in the pocket, sliding away from pressure and then squaring up to make accurate throws. He displayed great footwork and just very solid fundamentals along with what appeared to be a strong arm. I prefer a pure pocket passer over a dual-threat QB. Miami will always have elite talent at WR and RB requiring a patient QB who will be dedicated to going through his progressions, buying time and getting the ball to the playmakers.

That's why I think if we take 2, we will take one of each. IMO its Mahalek/White/or another pocket passer, and Flowers/Edouard. ASSUMING we have a full class to offer.

Mahalak's film shows a lot of him working out of the zone-read option. From watching it I don't see a lot of refinement in his pocket skills, not to say that he doesn't have them, but for me he is clearly working as a dual-threat QB. That would put him in competition for a scholarship with Edouard and Flowers who are both superior athletes IMO.

^He certainly throws with easy power. It seems such a waste of finite development/teaching time to stick a kid built like this into an option offense.

I heard Edouard's not even that good, and that's from people who have seen him at Florida Fire practice. He's definitely not better than White or Freebeck. I really don't understand the obsession with this kid. Great athlete though.

Morgan can WING it

Safe to say this year Miami will get one or two really good QB's. tons of good prospects out there. Don't forget our WR core will entice plenty of strong arms.

I believe in the quality of the Elite 11 QBs.

I'm in on takin two QBs.

If none of the SoFL QBs make the Elite 11 Finals camp, I think top 25 nationally, then I say we take Eduoard or Flowers and go after a guy that makes the Elite 11 Finals for the other slot.

Did you see the crap Mahalak is working with out there?! No wonder his stats might be suspect those guys can't catch a cold.

He's got great mechanics and size, seems to throw a catchable ball for real receivers. Definitely wouldn't mind him and one of the local dual threat possibility guys.

Wouldn't you wait since he is the backup from last year?
