Prediction: Miami will be ranked in the preseason top 25

ok. its not like teams with identical records as other teams in front of them have been able to jump those same teams in the polls. that never happens, oh wait...

explain to me how fsu who started out ranked #4 last year ended up ranked behind teams who were behind them in the original polls and also had one loss? i can choose other examples just like this. all these hypotheticals yet no one can name a case where a team was left out of the title game due to their preseason ranking.

IMHO

No rankings until after week 6.
The problem is even if they take the pre-season top 25 away. Those guys who are voting won't look at it that way. They will still have a top 25 to them it just won't be made public until week 6.

Real reason we'll be ranked (if we are) is so media can hype the UF game as between two Top 25 teams.

generally speaking, the polls work themselves out.

Auburn 2005 probably doesn't agree with your statement. Nor does Miami '00. Nor does Oregon '01. Etc.

I'm confident none of those teams, all of whom got screwed out of a title match, started highly ranked in the preseason polls. The teams they lost out to most likely did.

The 2000 Canes were preseason #4 or #5 at worst.

The 2000 Canes finished ranked #2 in the human polls, but it was the retarded BCS computers that had FSU ranked #1 over undefeated Oklahoma and the Miami team that they lost to.

would rather be unranked.......we haven't done anything to deserve a ranking. let's earn it and climb as the season progresses.

Every team is 0-0 tho[/QUOTE

Certainly are correct there. 6-6 and 7-5 record over the last 2 years with losses to UVA and BC wouldn't want me to give this team a pre season ranking. On paper sure we should be but its not what we can do its what we have done recently that creates preseason ranking. It's all they have to go off of and that why the rankings eventually work themselves out as teams that should be good (us) take care of business and climb. Just not going to happen before we play a down though.

Preseason polls are more a marketing ploy than anything else.
It is/was a way for print media to generate buzz to sell more papers and for TV networks to generate viewership for top early season games.

Hypothetical #8 Clemson vs #10 UGA sounds a lot more enticing then just plain ole Clemson vs UGA.

But from a pure objective purpose doing it 5 weeks into the season would be the best.

We're picked the win the coastal so we will fall between 21-25. UF, Auburn, and Notre Dame all were ranked in that grouping last year after 5 or more losses the year before.

I have to agree that preseason rankings are basically useless based on false hype and past pedigree. I just hope we finally start winning again and are ranked when it actually matters

There is no reason to argue this point anymore. FSU had 2 loses last year. They lost the second game on the last weekend of the year. That would explain a lot, wouldn't it.

Even then rankings are BS. Everyone knew Alabama was going to roll the Irish. Probably 3 or 4 other teams in the SEC would have done the same thing last year.

Preseason rankings are the worst. I feel like they should rank after 2-3 weeks

people say this but in reality it makes no sense. the preseason rankings are a starting point. you can't have a poll with no starting point. is it perfect? no, but it relies on things like players returning, schedule, coaching changes, etc.

if you didn't have a preseason poll then exactly how do you propose ranking 120 teams with no starting point? then you would have even more of the 'eye test' bias in rankings. for example should the loser of uf-miami be ranked behind a team that's 2-0 with dominating wins over mid majors? how do you tell with no early indicators (which is what polls are) of the team's potential level of success? nobody is going to agree on stuff like that. that type of discussion would be even more rampant than it is today with even more bias considering people would have to come up with arbitrary starting points. the problem is what we have isn't perfect...but nothing is, continuing to change the sport won't make it so. same with all this playoff ****, before you know it it'll be 60 teams, just watch.

I don't know, maybe rank based in actual games played? Wouldn't expect anything less from a dumb ******* gator. "I don't know who's playin, but go GATAS!! / in Joe Dirt voice"

Because FSU had two losses

what? that has nothing to do with anything. before their 2nd loss they were ranked behind other 1-loss teams who started behind them in the polls thus disproving the myth that teams can't make up the gap from their original poll position. there are literally thousand of examples of this over the years. google is your friend.

ok. let me make this really simple so u can understand. If Miami starts out pre season No 5 in the country. And LSU is ranked NO 6 in the country. And they both lose in by a similar margin to a good team in any week of the season. When the next weeks polls come our Miami will still be ranked ahead of LSU. What were saying is all things being equal, the team that starts out ranked higher has a built in advantage to get into the title game or any BCS game for that matter. If you continue to argue that FACT there is no hope for u sir.

i agree with that actually, that's not really what i'm arguing. but we're veering off topic so i'll kill it.
