Portal Woes and Lack of Development: Why 9-1 Feels Worse Than it Should

Oregon has phenomenal depth? Let's take a look at their roster.

QB: Backup is Dante Moore -- who was bad at UCLA and got run out of town. 11 TDs, 9 INTs
WR: Traeshon Holden is their WR4. He has 28 receptions for 462 yards and 3 TDs. Jurrion ****ey and Ryan Pellum are their WR5 and WR6, they have a combined 1 catch for 7 yards.
TE: Kenyon Sadiq is the backup, 17 rec, 230 yds, 0 TDs.
OL: Only one of their backups have ever played meaningful snaps, Kawika Rodgers, he is a RS So.

Overall, they have very little *proven* depth on offense and the facts show that.

Moving to defense:

DE: Backups have a combined 7 tackles all year and 0 sacks. Nice.
DT: Tells the same story as DE, 6 tackles 0 sacks.
LB: Devon Jackson and Jestin Jacobs are good backup LBs. Nice depth there
CB: Dontae Manning is a JAG and so is Daylen Austin imo.
S: Their two backups are FR who haven't seen any meaningful minutes.

In summary, Oregon has no proven depth outside the LB position. Are the people on the bench talented and can't get on the field because the starters are good? 100% possible. But to flat out say they have phenomenal depth is a ridiculous statement to make.

Oh and on the development / instant impact piece. Not one starter for Oregon is a freshman. It is an extremely transfer / senior-heavy team. Oregon is also in the upper echelon of recruiting under Lanning. Looks like they aren't doing much either in terms of development either.

Shall I move on to the next team you listed?
Ah, stop it, please. You’re ruining the narrative.

Only at UM do you need to be 1st team all ACC by your sophomore year or you are considered a JAG according to our fans.
Nice

This assessment is fair as it stands right now. It’s also WAY too early to write off anyone in this past class or even the one before. I know that’s not what OPs doing. We did better in the portal this cycle but not good enough in key spots. Probably allocated resources poorly all things considered w a guy like Sam Brown or Alderman. I think next year we’ll be able to truly judge the development aspect. I think the D’s scheme is also making better players look worse similar to No’D. Win an ACC chip and knock this class out the water and we’ll be okay. Anything less and it’ll get weird imo

Agree with OP.

Who have we evaluated, recruited/signed and developed?

Even the sacred offensive line… CIS acts like Mirabal has o linemen littered around the NFL. It’s Sewell and that’s really it.

Rivers and Mauigoa were can’t miss prospects. We haven’t been able to develop a suitable center in three seasons. The LG, which was basically an audition for every linemen brought through the program to win - is manned by McCoy who’s barely starter quality. Cooper has regressed and like OP mentioned barely average. The run blocking early on, and now the pass blocking have been underperforming.

There’s no point in discussing the defense at this point, the entire operation can be blown up from coaches to players and we’d be in a better spot.

For a coach that brings nothing schematically, his evaluations and development have been disappointing. He’s really got to make up for the fact he’s not in the war rooms with his coordinators helping scheme up game plans each week. How the 24 and 25 class develops will make or break Cristobal.

OP makes a powerful case. That said, no one can argue the roster isn’t leaps and bounds ahead of what was inherited. It’s a turn around. Would someone else fix the mess faster, maybe, but maybe not. At least the mess is getting fixed. I think we’re very lucky to have Mario and his resolve, despite some on-the-job learning and a few glaring mistakes.
Welcome to CIS, Mrs. Cristobal.

Absolutely with this right now.

I do think the scheme is a big problem. We’re struggling to rush the passer consistently, we can’t cover, and there’s a ton of miscommunication in the back end. I’m no rocket scientist, but usually that equates to a multitude of defensive problems.

I’m not so sure what changed from last year, because Guidry was able to run a three man front when we got super banged up, and it worked out ok. This year he’s got his preferred packages, and it’s light years worse.

But like you said, there is still plenty of time to use all these wins to our recruiting advantage and close strong.

I can't disagree with the general premise of the post. The development of the high school crop and portal identification of top tier talent does need to improve to reach the higher ceiling of CFB no doubt. But some of the grades seem a bit dramatic to say the least: McCoy, Anez, and Riley Williams for examples as being non factors or stagnant in their development is a bit absurd. I definitely see most of the issues whether it be development or talent acquisition being skewed to the defensive side of the ball.

Bain is a superstar. He has single handedly taken over games in the 2nd half. He is getting doubled a lot.

I actually think the strategy and fundamentals are making our defensive players looks worse the they are.

I'm very close in posting with screenshots how defensive alignment on multiple plays have a severe weakness and they get exposed almost all of the time. To follow that up they don't get adjusted. And that's every game.

Essentially, Guidry "exotic" blitzes aren't getting home this year so its not covering up the gapping holes in the defense that have been created. This is likely to do that coaches now have a year of film on his fronts.

People can question the timing of the OP but the data cannot be ignored. You can stick your head in the ground if you want, but it doesn’t change the roster.

Again, I believe it’s too early to draw any conclusions but to say you are not concerned is naive.

Data in a vacuum. do this for every team that finish with a top 7 recruiting class the last 2 years and show where this is exclusive to Miami.

Then maybe we have something.

Just doing a Quick Look at the stats for Bama players from their 2023 classes they don’t have a bunch of kids contributing in a big way this season and a couple of their highest profile signees transferred out.

I don't understand what has happened to Guidry. He was great last year. I don't think he stopped being a good coach in the middle of this season something is going on. I think there are probably multiple factors that are just creating a poor result.

This isn't based on any info, so it shouldn't spark transfer speculation. But I really hope some of the 2023 guys stick around to truly develop. Chris Johnson, Jr., Tommy Kinsler, Frankie Tinilau, Josh Horton and the Washingtons are guys with impact tools who have flashed in practice.

There are reasons why they aren't ready to contribute on an ACC Title contender right now, but long-term the payoff is potentially big. I hope they stick with it.
When it was apparent that our offense wasn’t clicking and was needing a spark, I kept yelling at the TV to get CJJ some reps. Get the kid open on a wheel route! Dawson is not creative in the slightest.

Yall don’t feel like yall kinda over doing it over one loss? Especially after wining 9 straight.

Genuinely asking..
I agree the First loss for any school and the chicken littles come out on the message boards. The defense not getting any better and has regressed since the Florida game is a huge concern.

I think Guidry hasn’t done a very good job adjusting to the lack personnel needed to run his scheme. That said, personnel and lack of talent is the main culprit here. We aren’t playing very good teams and our guys on defense particularly the DBs and LBs don’t look like they belong against meh comp.
