PODCAST: D$ answers recruiting and team questions and interview with Juan Minaya

So Gaby thinks we have a great shot with Stewart than D$ does?
Not sure I understand your question. I got the impression that D$ feels Stewart is eerily similar to how the Samson recruitment went (which is a good thing for us).

I didn’t listen to the podcast so I just asked because I didn’t see an asterisk next to his name and Gabby seems to think we are looking good there.

Turning over an entire staff is hard af? We had to change out two coordinators, and get a WR coach while hitting the portal. It’s a ton of work

He also added JT, replaced Smith with Harris at RB coach, as well as moved Field to staff position and promoted Woodiel to TE coach. The only position coaches to persist were Mirabal, Salave'a and Addae.

I don't doubt DB is a problem. I have eyes. Even our 2 NFL picks were hot garbage in my opinion (yes, I said it, I think Stevenson was as much a liability as he was an asset ... same as James Williams so far, btw.). The irony is I am highly confident we play much better at DB this season despite losing those guys. But yeah, recruiting is a concern there.

That said, why do so many fans have to focus on the blemish, not the beauty, of the work Mario is doing? It's Pygmalion-esque.

Good Question....and before anyone starts that "Look what he did at Georgia" that was all Kirby (Who learned from DB Guru Saban)
Georgia didn't even try to retain him.
I like Mario a lot but pretty clear he was in a rush to take care of a lot of things when he got here (understandable) because his hiring decisions were pretty questionable in hindsight

This I didn't put in the Cliff notes

"They're going to do whatever it takes to get him [Stewart]"
"This one is REALLY a battle, this one is going to have the most fireworks over the next couple of weeks"

Hopefully this helps.

D$ also mentioned he felt good about the asterisk recruits because of both the visit and NIL discussions after the fact (sum total of the situation, not just the visit). As we all know, the NIL discussions after the visit are key here.

There's still closing to be done
Substantial NIL available for all these guys.
ALL these guys are firmly on the list.
Again, I wouldn't get hung up on the asterisk because he said

these are the best I feel about today, but that could change
Entirely possible that a couple days from now, more names could have asterisks added [or potentially removed]

A very fluid situation

I was surprised when Addae survived last offseason's staff purge considering what was said about him as a recruiter by insiders on the board for months.

It seemed we were aiming way higher at CB in last year's cycle. Brown and Stafford were great gets and we obviously fought like **** to land the top corner in the country in Cormani. We also tried but failed to flip Matthews from OSU, Jackson or Denson from UF, and Austin from LSU, all of whom were consensus 4*'s and three of whom were Top 125 overall players nationally.

Guys like Mack, Knight, and Frederique would *maybe* fit the bill as the CB3 or CB4 in a class, but all 3 possibly being takes should raise some eyebrows. It doesn't seem we're in the game for anyone close to Brown or Stafford's level right now. Some may be more optimistic than me about our chances of somehow flipping Robinson from UGA, but aside from him there's no smoke linking us with any other premier CB1.

My bet is if Cormani did not pull signing day shenanigan's we could have had a better shot to flip one of those top 125. But Cormani was out clear #1, getting him makes those others less of a need. If he pulled out much earlier, we likely kick some of his allocated money to sweeten the deal for a flip. Maybe nothing happens but my guess is the staff's attention and financial backing were not as all in as they could have been assuming they were in a good spot with Cormani. I do agree CB recruiting this year seems to be down. Unless they can flip Ellis I do not see a true CB1 we are in it for and frankly not too many true CB1 out there.

It is an oddly down year for FL for CBs top ranked:

1. Robinson (4) (IMG) UGA commit*
2. Charles Lester (18) (Venice/Sarasota, no real shot)
3. Kobe Black (23) (TX)
4. Bryce West (46) (OH) OSU Commit*
5. Aaron Scott (53) (OH)
6. Selman Bridges (56) (TX)
7. Zabien Brown (61) (CA)
8. Corian Gipson (64) (TX)
9. Marcelles Williams (71) (CA) USC Commit*
10. Dakoda Fields (84) (CA) USC commit*
11. Jamari Howard (85) (FL-Miami) (odd situation here, apparently hasnt played much ball and we are monitoring)
12. Ify Obidegwu (113) (MD) Oregon Commit*
13. Wardall Mack (116) (LA)
14. Cai Bates (129) (FL-Orlando)
15. Kaleb Beasley (159) (TN) TN commit*
16. Jayln Crawford (172) (GA)
17. Jon Mitchell (196) (FL-JAX) Penn St commit*
18. Jameer Grimsel (223) (FL-TPA)
19. Ondre Evans (248) (TN) LSU commit*

Was there any talk of LJ McCray? Not a +1? I’m gonna listen through the pod after work tonight

Jameson Young. Remember that name.

Considering how light the DE board is, gotta think we feel good about two of those three. Doesn’t necessarily mean we ultimately land them, but the staff must feel confident.
Couple of points here:

  • D$ said he forgot to list McCray.
  • He also listed Franklin and Jackson in both lists which I didn't do (and have corrected since)
  • Remember, this is a +1 list which means there could be others, but these get added regardless of whoever else has committed. Other DEs may only get in if slots are available
D$ has Kendall listed in his DT list. To my knowledge, he's a DE only, but I guess he could be a hybrid like Franklin (which would make him even a higher priority).

Updated and corrected DE list.

  • Stewart (#1 overall on the board). Very similar to the Samson recruitment
  • Lightfoot* (Miami made strong move this weekend)
  • Rudolph
  • McCray
  • Jackson (Kendall)
  • Franklin (D$ not as connected in this recruitment, we could be in good shape)

One word to describe Jackson “ potential“. His ceiling is insane. I’m going to check Bucholtz out this season. Well , that’s if he doesn’t commit to UF before.
