The Wichita State Shockers' mantra has served them well. As of yesterday afternoon, they're the first college basketball team in 10 years to go undefeated in the regular season. (While 5 of the AP top 10 teams lost in the same day, 1st time in a decade). So, what's our mantra?
Getting punked by other SoFla kids, taunting UM sidelines? Getting owned by a team like Duke? An atmosphere of irrelevance for the last decade? All I know is the lack of fight at the 2013 Russell Athletic Bowl reminded me of the 2010 loss to USF, Miami's Senior Day, that sent Randy Shannon on his way.
In spite of the widely agreed upon D'ficiencies, UM players need to task themselves to play w/ a new level of toughness, aggression, and intent in 2014.
Underlying all, it's playing with conviction - the will to dominate that's fostered the historic success of Miami's past.
(Think Schnellenberger's call for a NC in '79... Trash talkin' Oklahoma in '86... Ed Reed @halftime vs. FSU in '01)
Scheme and coaching aside, I want to see this team fight. I want to see them play with pride. I want to see them PLAY ANGRY. I want to see a team who "honors the gifts bestowed them" and plays with HEART.
Football's a game of inches, and on any given day "you're gonna win or you're gonna lose. The point is, can you win or lose like a man?"
No "cloud", no "handcuffs", no more excuses. If there's any one thing I want to see this season, I wanna see the "bad boys" of college football come back -- The rise of the empire. And in that respect, I don't think I'm asking too much.
It's us against the world. We all we got -- We all we need.
