Philip Wilder Here comes the late offers

What's wrong with him? How much game tape did you watch on him?

He doesn't move his feet when blocking it's almost an after thought and he is a leaner which shows poor flexibility. He relies on his strength to block rather than technique, an to coach those bad habits out of him will take years which UM doesn't have.

For comparison here is a 3* OT out of Georgia, notice the difference in how his feet are always moving like jack hammers rather than being static like cement shoes. Also he bends at the knees when blocking, keeping his body over his feet .

I think this is actually a good gem and I have questioned some of the staff’s takes in the past. However, I like this kid. He’ll take a couple years to develop but I think he’s a good prospect. He’s raw but I like his athleticism. I don’t think this is a bad offer but the staff has to develop the young man and not rush him like Zion.

Listen; I hear what u’re saying, but in case u haven’t seen us in the last 10 yrs, in particular, we’ve had **** poor player development, to the point NFL scouts have went from automatically assuming The U on the side of the helmet meant future star, to ?ing what’s going on in Coral Gables.

We, currently, are in no way, shape, or form in a position to take on projects when this staph can’t read a manual on how to build said projects. We are barely getting consistent production from guys who experts considered blue chip players, so how r we to get it out of 2 star/non ranked players?

Kid might become all world at another program, but not here. We’ve seen Wisc OL history, Iowa’s OL history, Iowa St’s OL history, etc. Those staffs develop 2 star/3 star guys consistently. Proper evaluations (which we don’t have), set schemes that plays to the roster’s strength (which we don’t have), great S&C program (which we don’t have), and a set culture (which we don’t have).

So yeah, F Butch & his inability to recruit and these last minute Flea Market offers.

You can fix a poor technique.. kids just raw and needs to be developed. You can tell he has power and once he gets his hands on you it's over. He also can put on another 30-45LBs with his frame. He looks the part but has been poorly coached and needs to work on stance and attack

technique yes, feet no.

my concern with this kid is bend and feet, not technique.

To be fair, I didn’t think Zion was all that. This kid is obviously raw. I personally think it’s due to technique in regards to how he comes out his stance. I think all of that can be worked on. That’s why I think he’ll take a couple of years.

Oh and I definitely agree that OL are hard to judge. Most of the time it’s just a bigger dude mauling a smaller kid like this tape but I do like what I see from this young man.

Me either....and that's why he was a 2 star kid. But in his tape he showed athleticism and a mean streak. You can work with that.

For Zion, I think his weight gain was too much too fast and his feet/balance didn't keep up. He looked much less athletic this year and his feet were a big problem, particularly getting out of his stance.

Oh I definitely agree with you on Zion. You can’t have a kid put on close to 60 pounds in like 6 months the want him to start. They rushed him back too soon. His body has to adjust to that weight. However, he should be better next year. I don’t expect nor do I want this kid to play right away. He has potential, let him grow and develop.

I understand your frustration but what else can we do? I mean no school gets a class of automatic major contributor as. Literally every school has to give their players time to develop. I mean even if he was a 4 or 5 star recruit it doesn’t mean instant impact recruit, especially on the Oline. Should we just rely on the portal for guys who were either kicked out, riding the bench or injury ridden. Even then you have to wait whether it’s maturity (GWillis), injuries (Bolden), or them sitting out (Phillips). I don’t have issues with late offers. It’s recruiting. A ton of guys blow up during their senior years.

I don't have issues with late offers when the rest of your recruiting class looks solid/firm and you're looking for late bloomers or guys who blew up senior year (which you should have found well before now since the season is over for most). Offers this close to early signing day is tricky because even kids who did bloom late may not jump on board bc you ignored them for far too long.....at least give it a few weeks to allow the kid to think about things.

I do have issues with late offers when it looks like pure desperation a week before signing day after whiffing on every other target you had.

My biggest issue with this supposed offer is the optics and the fact i'm not a fan of the film i saw. Give me another kid and i might give you a different opinion.

Are they expecting him to sign with the early nsd? I thought he was taking a visit in January?

Sorry, for this kid i don't know. I was making a general statement.....mainly in regards to all the late offers last year at LB who turned us down bc we ignored them for so long.

Yea I get that. I see where you’re coming from however, it’s a part of the game and it’s also how the coaches communicated with the kids. Some kids opted for other programs because the staff didn’t think they were good until other big time programs jumped in the ring. You can’t basically tell the player that you think they suck but then try to jump on them once they start getting some hype.

I think this kid is different. I don’t believe they heard about him until late. So I don’t think he’ll be upset for a late offer.
