Phil Steele calls Miami "legitimate title contender"

all comes down to the oline and coach searls earning his keep

if they only gradually improve from what we saw in the WVU game, I'll be surprised if we're not in the playoffs

fsu game is the only real question mark, the rest of the games.. gl moving the ball on this defense

Better offensive line with Darling on the inside and Gauthier at center. Donaldson being ready to go and a mauler makes this line improved. Can McDermott live up to his billing finally at left tackle? We need him to be more than serviceable. St. Louis got better and better as the season progressed. Think we'll be more than serviceable there.

There's some major assumptions being made about QB play, WR play, OL play, and secondary play.

I'm as optimistic as anyone about some of the talent we have at these positions, but we better hope these youths are hot and ready to pop.

Think we have a projected Championship defense. The rest we'll find out soon enough.

The secondary situation changed 5 nanoseconds after Delaney agreed to transfer for his grad year. Let us experiment and move Redwine to safety which looks like a successfully transition. Young took a huge leap. Dean gives us a big body and they really like what they see with Carter. Best thing to say about Bandy is pure football player. Comes with a college ready body. Nasty competitor. He is going to be fun to watch.

The depth on the defensive line is insane. Might be the best we've had and certainly from a depth perspective for a least 2 decades. The three amigos at linebacker should be much more physically ready to handle the entire year. I love that Owens is pushing for a starting job.

Plus, the infusion of talent will greatly improve our special teams.
Correct on Delaney (and Dean). Their additions led to a ripple effect. Specifically, if Redwine can hold up and produce even 60-75% of what R. Jenkins provided, as you mentioned. I was recently arguing about Delaney and our DBs with an FSU fan. I think they're going to be surprised by our DBs and overall defense. They give our front 7 credit, but claim we're so bad at DB it won't matter. I disagree.

If we had another non-True Frosh Safety, it'd be an insanely deep defense. As it stands, if Amari Carter can give us a portion of what Jamal Carter provided, it will all work out fine. I think we'll see some interesting packages from Diaz this season. I expect 5-6 DBs and overload blitzes. I continue to repeat what the pass coverage evolution of our LBs will do.

I'm interested to see what Diaz does on passing downs this year. Last year I saw a lot of 3-2-6 on passing downs with 3 CBs and 3 safeties on the field.

I think this year we see more of that defense except with 4 CBs and 2 safeties early on. We had two senior safeties last year and poor depth at CB. This year I think we have better depth at CB, and we're obviously not experienced at safety with this being Redwine's first year there and a true freshman behind him and Quan.

Not a fan of 3 DL on obvious passing downs with the talent available at the position.

Let these kids eat.

Only hole I see in our defense is safety. How will Redwine perform? God forbid Redwine goes down, who fills in? Talent and depth are scary at the FS position. Luckily, we'll have a nasty front 7 and, imo, won't play many teams that can expose this weak spot.

Amari carter has been very impressive this spring at safety

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Amari more of a SS/box type?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they had him behind redwine this spring

Things seem pretty delicate personnel-wise on offense.

If something happens to Perry, Walton, Richards, Herndon, McDermott I'm not sold that we have adequate depth to overcome it.

The big thing working in our favor is the schedule (FSU early enough where they likely won't spoil our season if we lose).

So you're saying that if we lose our three best players on offense, we likely won't be able to overcome it?

Shocking revelation.

No.

If we lose any of those guys the depth isn't there to overcome it.

Perry doesn't have a capable backup.

Walton doesn't have a proven backup.

Richards is the only sure thing at WR right now.

Herdon goes down and we're down to Irving and Polendey.

1. We don't know if Perry is even the starter yet. Most teams can't overcome the loss of their starter anyway
2. I think we can get the job done if Walton goes down. I watched Dallas Crawford win us games. Homer showed good pop last year
3. True, but I'm banking on the young talent to step up and make plays should he go down. I think others will need to step up anyway because AR is going to be bracket covered
4. If Herndon goes down, I would guess we would probably go more 3 and 4 wide sets and possibly bring in an extra linemen for "big" sets. We have enough assets on the outside to overcome this. A lot of teams don't even feature tight ends anymore

Again.. almost every team in the country would be in a similar situation if they lost their top guys at those positions. Not every team is Bama or early 2000s Canes.

Exactly if you lose deshaun Watson from clemson, that's a multi loss team last year. If dalvin cook would have gotten hurt fsu would have loss 4 or more games

Jaquan was the defacto nickle last year because we had so little depth at corner. Not a problemthis year.

It's not just the drop-off in talent from starter to backup, depth is a bit shaky in terms of numbers at RB and TE.

But you're right, most teams would be in a pickle if their top guys got injured.
