Phil Steele 2014 Risers/Fallers

It was no coincidence that Miami's season started to slide when running back Duke Johnson was injured

It was no coincidence our season slid when we played the four toughest teams on the schedule.

Duke was tearing FSU up before he got hurt and we were definitely in the game, then he went down.

I know when he got hurt, my first thought was, "there goes our season."

Seems like national press thinks more highly of our team and our coach then most of our "fans."

We were losing 35-14 and didn't convert and 4th down on the play he got hurt, but yeah, we were "in the game."

Don't underestimate the impact of losing Dorsett, BEFORE that game. He stretches the field and allows Duke to run against some 7 man fronts, instead of 8.

Duke is great, but unless he planned on splitting his cells off and forming a defensive coordinator, 3 defensive linemen worth a ****, and a couple of linebackers that could run, then he wouldn't have made much of a difference.

We gave up an average 42 points a game in those losses, and 540 yards.

You know that a running game averaging 200 yards a game makes your defense better, if only by the defense not having to be out there for 70+ snaps.

We all know that our DT's, mlb's and safeties have been average at best, but when they are not worn down, they are markedly better.

While you are correct in theory, that's not how it played out in reality. Our time of possession was awful with or without Duke.

Post like these allow me to see who has and has not played or coached football before, and if they have, probably wasn't very good at either.

A stagnant offense is almost worse than our defensive scheme itself.

How does that or any post indicate someone's level of ability on the playing field?

Key word.....almost. The only game our offense was really "stagnant" was the Louisville game.

Losing your starting rb when you do not have a backup is bad enough but when that guy is the best guy on your team you are going to feel the pain.

Who's job is it to find some capable backup rbs? Thanks [comma] Randy and the "cloud" are not the answers by the way

Right?

Dukes injury can't be understated. That kid changed everything on offense for us.

But still, its just more masking the real issues. Unfortunately these guys are going to get bailed out by the talent we have and are adding.

Couldn't agree more.

isn't that part of the job? to bring talent and add talent? .. am i missing something here?

and away we go

by August some of you retards will be calling for a 12-0 season. I see a worse team next year. if Williams is the QB, we are in big trouble IMO

Of course. I'm just saying I personally think our recruiting is very strong. Strong enough to mask our obvious issues on the coaching staff. A good coaching staff could take this team far but we are going to be stuck where we are at. JMO.

Agree on you overall outlook, but to put it on Williams at QB is unfair.

i actually think our "defense" will benefit from better ball control next yr, because I dont expect williams to stretch the field. Even with that, we will still lose to FSU and drop another 2-3 games by getting outcoached. The scores will be closer, we will give up fewer yards/points and Golden will spin it like he always does.

To a degree they are. When your QB leads the conference in three and outs, you lose your deep threat,
and arguably your best player on the team in Duke Johnson, then yes. It impacts the defense when the offense was averaging 200 yds on the ground and when Duke went down they averaged 121 yds.

The defense stunk but the offense didn't help them at all down the stretch...

I just find it comical that a lot of people still think the offensive woes and the defensive struggles are mutually exclusive.

What a moran...Louisville just hired Olive Garden. May hire Tressel as DC...still have Hurtt. I would say...RISING like a Miami Central Rocket.

Stop the madness. Your using logic with all these golden haters. They won't stand for it.

I don't see how this team wins more than 9 games next year. Schedule is much harder, and we all know how much of a fraud Golden is vs competent 8 win teams.

I've followed Phil Steele for perhaps 25 years. This is a common tendency of his, and it's based on solid logic. If he had a team pegged as upswing or downswing the prior year and it didn't fully pan out that way, he reasserts it again the following season, unless there's an avalanche of personnel/coaching changes in the opposite direction.

That's the way to do it. Have confidence in your big picture focus as opposed to emotional overreacting and swaying the other way. That's the same method I used on Dolphin sites to peg Charles Clay as most underrated player on the team heading into 2013. Lots of us liked his versatility and playmaking ability heading into 2012 and expected him to thrive entering his second season. It didn't play out that way, not even close. The mistake would have been to sour on Clay, instead of realizing the handicapping was correct and no reason it couldn't attach one year late.
