Pete/DMoney/Tito.....can we get this straight:

No offense but you have to be dumb as rocks not to get the minimum to get in, with or without the sliding scale. Saying that it's still unfair we can't get some of these kids. Miami Dade Public School System needs to help us.

this is where Luke and ICE and other so called inner city hero's should start a program for not just athletes but all kids looking at college futures...tutors, self test, act sat work shops... but its easier to go on the radio and cry racism

its easier for them to blame others as to why they're not at UM. him and stupid friends "mentor" these kids yet don't help em at all in the classroom. golden showers stupid nonsense of dumbing down miami to get everyone in is retarded. the standards aren't very difficult. at some point, its on the kids to get it together in the classroom to qualify.

You people don't seem to understand it's not that kids can't get in here, it's that despite those bad schools they CAN get into LSU/FSU/LOU/AU etc.

Why is a kid or mentor going to start a tutoring program when they don't need it to get into major elite BCS programs???

Not to change the subject, but the Miami public school system is absolute trash. The fact that these kids can't get the reduced minimum compared to the typical student should be a troubling sign not just for getting kids to play football, but our society as a whole.

Yeah, why would a mentor help his mentee get his **** together in the classroom? Literally zero benefits.

Because these kids are going to school for football, and they have done what the NCAA requires of them academically.

We require a 2.5 Core GPA and an 820 SAT. The NCAA requires a 2.0 GPA with the sliding scale. If you have a 2.0 you have to have a higher than 820 GPA, so our test score requirement is moot. If you have a higher SAT score you seriously should have no problem having a 2.5 GPA unless you are just incredibly lazy. 2.5 in Core classes means half C's and half B's. One thing to remember, Miami is small. We don't have a lot of "get the stud athletes through school" majors available. The first responsibility of the university is to graduate kids with legitimate degrees. Even in our best days, the majority of our players did not go to professional sports careers.

It has less to do with academics than it does with being a underachieving and poorly run program for the better part of the decade. Good players don't want to lose.

And yet they commit to us anyway, only to decommit when they don't have the test scores and five other elite programs say it doesn't matter.

And then they go to FSU and win them a title.

How many do you think we lose a year to academics?

Quite a few. Stuckley, Griffin, Lockley, possibly Wyche and maybe more over the last two hauls. But these kids aren't going to our rivals is the thing.

I was being facetious. There is more to life than football, and a good mentor would presumably try to show that to his mentee. You don't need to do well in the classroom just to play football -- there is value in education. Even if YOU don't care, because you're just cheering the team to win football games, a good mentor should make his mentee care, because one injury and all you have left is that education.

The logic of not using the sliding scale is ridiculous. 90% of the players wouldn't get into UM if they didn't play football. So why draw an arbitrary line in the sand and put us at a competitive disadvantage? Either make them have the same entrance requirements as a regular student, or use the sliding scale that everyone else uses

Dont you know why? we're the harvard of sofla!!

Let the coaches worry about getting kids to graduate and stay eligible. If the program is doing its job they will. If they began to fail then raise the standards. I don't think our standards cost us a ton of a lot of kids but 1 a year is to many IMO.

It's easy for kids to get the grades they need in HS to satisfy the GPA part of the qualification. HS teachers have been known (wink wink) to give kids grades so as to not prevent them from getting their big chance to play D-1 football. The problem is that it's not so easy to get that test score if you really are a dumbass. Nobody can "give" you an acceptable SAT score.
