[h=1]One suspect arrested in laptop theft at University of Miami[/h]

laptop theft Wednesday night on the University of Miami campus.
UM used its emergency notification network shortly after 9 p.m.
Wednesday to alert students there was a "black male on campus" whom
school police were looking for.
Although a student reporter on campus posted a story on his personal
website early Thursday morning saying two Hurricanes football players
were arrested in connection to the theft, two sources have told The
Miami Herald the person arrested by campus police "is not an athlete."
It is not known whether the other individual who fled on foot has been
identified by police yet.
UM's media relations department sent out the following release on
Twitter Thursday morning to clear up the situation.
"Last night, University of Miami Police responded to a laptop theft on
campus. Both subjects fled and one was later apprehended in the
perimeter," the statement read. "In an attempt to quickly notify the
campus that a suspect was at large, an active police perimeter was
being set up and that people should find a secure location/avoid the
area, an incomplete University ENN [Emergency Notification Network]
alert was initially distributed. The University regrets the error.
Police are still investigating."
Students were first alerted of the incident at approximately 9:13 p.m.
through the ENN that there campus police were looking for a "black
male on campus wearing black and white tennis shoes, white shirt w/blk
writing, black shorts."
Another emergency notification was sent at 9:41 p.m. saying police had
setup a "Perimeter around Mahoney Pearson Merrick St. Ponce Blvd and
Pavia Garage. [Find] a Secure Location [and] avoid area."

Did you read his article in the Herald last week (or so?). It was loaded against us, from the viewpoints he decided to validate (notice that there were two sides in his article, but that the way he wrote it was pointed towards Shapiro's side, while disregarding the quote from those who claimed that this particular allegation was untrue), to the language used, to the ******* paragraph headers. "A Caddy Escalade" is something you only write as a header if you are attempting to conjure up images of thuggery. It was so pointed and biased it is unbelievable.

The Nevin Shapiro story is full of holes, half-truths, and outright lies, hence the difficulty the NCAA is having corroborating much of the allegations, but we never really hear a lick of that from anybody except (surprisingly enough) Barry Jackson. And probably only because it is his job to report facts and rumors obtained from sources he considers trustworthy, not post his slant and attempt to shape public opinion on an issue.

There is massive bias against this program all across the nation, and we are an easy target for reporters to make a name for themselves with. People will automatically believe anything they hear about Miami, and members of the media who wish to gain some name recognition know this and love to write salacious articles about us at every opportunity, regardless of the veracity of their claims.
