I'm as big of a Golden fan as there is. But I'm not buying his spin on that play-calling against UF. Nor am I suggesting that we should have taken huge gambles by slinging it all over the field. You can have a patient and conservative approach and still incorporate short passes, especially on first downs when the defense is expecting run.

But to run left, run right, then pass on 3rd down against that defense over and over put way too much pressure on our defense. They were out there far too long. And if we continue w/ that overly conservative strategy, I'm afraid it will catch up to us at some point.

And to continue ... that offense in the second half was very much a play not to lose, rather than play to win strategy. And the problem w/ playing not to lose is that you give the opposing teams opportunities to potentially come back, just as we did when we went into the play not to lose prevent defense that lead to their only non-gift score.

Remember that UF left some points out there: the dumbass 2-point attempt, the missed field goal, and the ill-advised QB sneak on 4th and 1, when our DL had already shown they were a force to be reckoned with.

In short, I hope we don't play this conservative offense against our other tough opponents, like FSU and Va Tech.

I HATE this mentality, but I guess it made sense in the flow of the game. We won.

It just strikes me as a loser mentality. I want us to attack and dictate to teams, not go into a shell and hold on for dear life.

And the problem with winging it around with an erratic QB in a slugfest is that you stop the clock with incompletions, which taxes your defense even more, you risk pick 6s, which can turn the momentum of the game completely around, sacks, etc. A good HC gets a feel for the tone of the game and does what he needs to do to get out of there with a win, which is all that matters in that game.

I don't understand how fans can say the gameplan was conservative when we were giving the ball to our BEST player. If the Oline could have even created a single crease in the second half Duke would have made something happen. We adjusted to the game it wasn't a shoot out it was a slugfest. Also Morris wasn't on his A game. If Morris was sharp and accurate I think they would have trusted him more. But he was inaccurate and almost threw a pick. Then on 3rd and 25 they call a deep pass and he throws a pick. If the DBs doesn't step out of bounds gives them the lead in the game.

I mean seriously. Golden has been here 3 years already, you know he has no problem slinging the ball all over the field. To over analyze 1 game is absurd. He did what it took to win THAT game.

I may be mixing games together at this point, but my recollection is that UF missed a FG in the first half.

Let's wait til we get more game time with our offense. Last year FSU was the favorite and lost because of turnovers. Coley was the OC for FSU...they left nothing on the table we took this game. MEs, as Al talks about all the time, are big in games like this.

No the didn't miss a FG, they were 1 for 1. They choose to go for 2 on an extra point and missed that. 2 TDs, 1 EP, 1 FG = 16 Points Total.

We can have the kind of mentality next year after we show we have finally gotten the monkey off our back. For now we just needed a won, good, bad or ugly. Who cares, now we have HUGE Mo going into a schedule that is very much in our favor.

I stand corrected. I've watched so much CFB in the last week that I confused a missed attempt from another game.

If people think the offense is "struggling" and having "issues," what do you want Golden to do?

Go extra aggressive, take a lot of chances. It was clear that the offense, after the first quarter, was out of rhythm and not connecting. We won the game, our defense held it down, I am not sure what you are worried about? Let's not forget that UF's big way of moving the ball is running it down your throat. Our defense held and stopped their running attack.

This is ONE GAME, this is ONE GAME PLAN. Other teams will have different game plans, other teams will have different defenses.

I think some of you are over analyzing this GAME PLAN and assume it will be the same over the whole season.

It's cool.

Coach Golden is a master at messaging.

I don't know that I believe what he is saying, but he does a great job of packaging and selling it.

And not only does it make for a nice after-the fact explanation, but it has the added benefit of taking potential heat off of Coley, Morris, etc.
