If you are one of those ppl that believes Al Golden isnt full of **** then this article may explain what happened w/ the offense during the UF game....

UM coach Al Golden says his offense needs to improve, but he wants the unit to be patient and not lose its composure.

All week, UM coach Al Golden has been asked on radio shows and during teleconferences — and yes, right after the Hurricanes’ 21-16 upset over the Gators — about his team’s sputtering offense.

And all week, Golden, whose defense, not offense, was the focus of intense criticism last year, has been explaining the virtues of patience.

He admitted to being frustrated by the lack of third-down conversions — 1 of 11 against Florida (with 212 yards of total offense) and 4 of 14 against FAU (with 503 yards). And he has acknowledged the passing game isn’t as crisp as it needs to be, the veteran offensive line didn’t generate a ground game against the Gators and some players “lost their composure” and “lost their technique.”

But the offensive strategy against UF, Golden said, unfolded as coaches realized the game had become a back-and-forth slugfest and the Canes defense could be trusted.

As Golden witnessed Pat O’Donnell’s booming punts backing up the Gators and the Canes’ defense getting takeaways, he said it was prudent “just to be patient.” He praised UM offensive coordinator James Coley for not resorting to what he said the Canes sometimes did in the past: winging the ball and risking turnovers, which would have come against a fierce secondary.

DON’T TAKE THE BAIT

“I kept telling James just to be patient,” Golden said on Hurricane Hotline. “It’s so important that you have guys like that on your staff, because you could easily say, ‘Hey, we’re not getting an inch, so let’s just throw it.’ But now you’ve taken the cheese, you’ve taken the bait, and the whole thing unravels on you.

“We never let that unravel.”

He compared UM’s conservative strategy to two great tennis players at the baseline.

“There’s nothing wrong with just hitting it back for a while, until you get the angle and the shot you want,” he said. “We just kept hitting it back and said, ‘OK, you’re going to hit the net, or you’re going to hit it long. Prove to us that you can beat us.’ ”

Golden blamed quarterback Stephen Morris’ fourth-quarter interception on himself, telling WQAM play-by-play announcer Joe Zagacki that it was “absolutely my fault because that should have been what we call a CAR play — catch and run” — on third-and-25 from the Miami 37-yard line.

Freshman cornerback Vernon Hargreaves, whose father is a former UM linebackers coach, intercepted Morris and returned the ball 24 yards.

“We could have easily just conceded it, or threw it underneath and picked up 10 or 12 yards, punted it for 50 and then had a 62-yard swing,” Golden said. “Just a bad judgment call on my part.”

Golden refused to pin any blame on Morris or veteran receiver Phillip Dorsett, who for the second week were out of sync at times — though the two connected on a perfectly executed 52-yard touchdown late in the first quarter.

On one play with just over 10 minutes left in the final quarter, Dorsett cut toward the middle of the field on a safety blitz, his back to Morris as the quarterback threw to another spot.

MISSING CONNECTION

“They just disconnected a couple times and that’s it,” Golden said Wednesday. “It’s really not a function of any one thing.”

Morris and his teammates worked on third-down offense the past few days, said Golden, who wants to get the tight ends and some of the younger receivers such as Stacy Coley and Malcolm Lewis more in the mix.

“Stephen’s balance is excellent right now,” Golden said. “He’s throwing the ball really well.”

Former UM running back Clinton Portis interviewed Morris on ACC Live this week, remarking about the offense not “clicking” like last year.

“A lot of times on third-down conversions, we’re failing because we’re not communicating what we need to do,” Morris said. “It just takes one little thing to mess up a play, so we’ve got to focus on the little things and do those a lot better.”

Good. So now we can put the Coley play calling baby to bed.

My one concern was not being able to run the ball AT ALL. Great running teams can run the ball at least mildly effectively against even 8 man fronts. We could barely get a yard if not going backwards. I rewatched the game 2x and there were a ton of missed blocking assignments by the OL, TE and WR. There will always be a few plays against a defense like UF where a player just flat out dominates your guy and makes a play but all of those plays are accentuated when you **** up plays where you have the right play call in and one guy makes a stupid mental error and allows a guy to go completely unblocked and make the play.

One of my solutions is to get Coley and Lewis involved more and it looks like Golden understands that. Lewis is the best pure slot and we need a guy like that for 3rd down and short yard conversions. Coley is our most talented WR with the ability to get open against anyone. Also would like to see Duke and Walford more active in the short passing game.

I thought the early quick passes to Hurns on the outside were doing a great job of creating more favorable down and distance and helping open up the running game. There's nothing wrong with those quick throws on 1st or 2nd down that pick up 5 or 8 yards. Maybe the UFrag DBs adjusted, so they went away from that....I don't know. But it was certainly working early.

Do you consider Florida a great running team? Most "experts" did up until the Miami game, and we shut them down without resorting to constant 8 man fronts.
All it takes is one missed assignment by either a lineman or a wideout and what should be a big gain turns into a 2-3 yard scrum.

People are complaining about the offense, but fail to recognize we are only 2 games into the season. There's a reason a lot of top 25 teams play a couple cupcakes at the start of the year: to get things in sync before the real season starts.
We just happened to schedule our toughest game early, and now we have two games to get clicking before our real season starts.

Second game of the year for both offenses. Defenses are always ahead of the offense especially when you have a new OC. I said this game would be a war and it was exactly that. Whoever made the most mistakes was going to lose and it wasn't Miami. Besides the huge win for the program there were no serious injuries which is good.

I guess it was a good strategy...we won and I am glad we won I would have taken a 1pt win just to **** the gatahs off even more...
Lots of Football left...and the D will get better Bush will be back SM will HAVE to get better...

I liked the strategy b/c Miami "shoulda" won 21-9, the game was one sided until the last couple minutes in the 4th.....

haters and dumbasses on ESPN use the 21-16 score to validate their bs opinion that Florida "shoulda" won that game.

"Florida turned the ball over 5 times and they only lost by 5 points" lol GTFOH.

I'd like to see some more varied play design in the run game. IMO that's all on Corch Coley.

Our 3rd down passing rating is second to last in the country right now, ahead of only Navy, which is 0 for 1.

Yikes...5 for 25 on 3rd down ranked 119th. That is horrible.

OP how many times have you coached the canes to a victory over the gata? ........that's what I thought

Its not a bad strategy at all, just need better execution. One thing about our offense last year is they didn't adapt well to different defenses. You can't always run and gun and expect it all to flow perfectly.

Hopefully this backs people off the ledge about Coley, though if you were there already you should probably just jump.

Like I said immediately after the game, you don't win wars by being cute. You panic and start flinging it all over and give them a cheap pick 6 and then they take the momentum and start feeling good. We got in a war against uf#g, and we just kept punching them in the mouth. Eventually, that strategy wore them out, and we kicked their asses. We had them beat 21-9 before that fluke TD drive at the end.

The Don went out of his way to emphasize several times since the game ended that he appreciated the fact that Coley didn't panic and start flinging it around. It was absolutely the right strategy for that game that day. Morris wasn't exactly on the money for most of that game, and the last thing you want him doing is hitting Purifoy in stride between the numbers.

People can say what they want, but we miss Mike James. He would help, regardless of what you think of the rest of the offense.

We beat the gators 21-3 cheap touchdown at the end and a cheap punt block that led to a TD. If the Final said 21-3 who would have even complained? Well that's what is ought to have been haha. They got their asses handed to them.

The only I heard them say is that Purifoy dude blocks a lot of kicks. Is that by design? If so is that something we could implement on ST? Would love to see 6-7 blocked kicks/punts on the season.

Good thing Al doesn't talk to any gators. Might upset him to find out they think they won. :ibisroflmao:
