One of Shannons worst moves was getting rid of Palermo, the D Line has never recovered.

He is currently coaching at Pitt, can only hope he returns at some point.

Mediocre DTs and poor coaching on the line is a bad recipe for success. Not feeling good here at all.

One thing that I think killed us over the previous two regimes was the turnstile of coaching changes. Coker started clearing house after the LSU debacle in the Peach Bowl. Shannon went through a ton of coaches. Nothing hinders a players development more than having to relearn personal coaching philosophies year after year. I'm glad that Golden has kept the coaching staff as intact as possible. As our players mature in all facets of their game a consistent coaching staff will benefit the overall development of this team. I know Franklin and D'Onofrio get a lot of sheitza, but these guys sticking around is the best thing for the program.

How many coaches have we dismissed prematurely that have ended up having success elsewhere? A decent amount. I know college football is more about the Jimmy's and the Joes than the Xs and the Os but we can't keep expecting to develop the players we have if we can't keep coaches.

Which DTs are mediocre?

That tremendous pass rush we got up the middle minus Porter last year. Did you forget how bad it was?

Porter barely played due to injury.

Robinson had his own issues w/ staff.

Pierre was a SO, improved (I'd say a good bit) over his first year.

Moore and Ivery were 4 months out of high school. King was a RS FR.

What'd you expect?

Shannon didn't get rid of Palermo. Palermo was relieved of his duties at the same time Coker was let go. Shannon was hired and then chose his own staff. No one knows if Palermo was even interested in being at Miami after the 2006 season. Maybe Shannon went after him..maybe he didnt.....but Shannon never fired Palermo because Palermo never worked for him

Palmero gave an interview during that timeframe and stated Shannon refused to speak to him following Coker's dismissal. So it was quite a apparent Shannon had no intention of ever retaining Palmero for the new staff. RS obviously had his eyes on Clint Hurtt - which we all know now was a colossal mistake.

And the way Shannon assembled his first staff, it was evident that RS didn't want anyone with more experience than himself on the staff.

One D-line thread after another. Are there not enough variations of it on the Recruiting Board?

Someone please post something on the basketball board that it was a failure by Jethro to miss out on Reggie Johnson playing both sports.

Clearly one of those little leaguers playing on our baseball team could have been groomed to play DT - EPIC FAIL by Golden, Jethro, Morris, Warren Sapp, Yonder Alonso and most certainly the reason Blake James has not put a stadium on campus already.

My favorite saying is 6 in one hand, half dozen in the other. I agree that if we could get another shot at a guy like Palermo we would be in good shape. (Jethro seems like a good guy and im sure his legend precedes him but not only has the Dline play been bad but he has been a bad recruiter too.) For some reason these HS kids just are not vibing with him. Sure we can get legacies (Chick) and local kids. But if its an even playing field he has struck out WAY too much. Not saying he should be fired BUT his job depends on the development of King/Moore/Ivery/Grimble IMO. Not saying they have to be All americans but if we get NOTHING out of them over the next two years he has to go.

BUT lets be fair here. Palermo's starting 4 on the dline in 04-05' was Calais Campbell (NFL pro bowler), Bryan Pata (would have been in the NFL if he didnt get killed), Kareem Brown, and Baraka Atkins (Still in the league earning a living) And a HEALTHY Eric Moncur too i believe. Hard to compare the talent level. Jethro would kill just to have one of these guys. AND the schemes are different. **** didnt Brown AND Campbell have double digit sacks that year?

Lets give Jethro a little more time and a few more bullets in his gun before we banish him. I think that is what Al is doing by getting all these JUCO DTs on board.

These same guys would have given up on every great DT we've ever had with the exception of Wilfork because none of them showed greatness until at least their 3rd year out of high school. They would have considered Suh and Fairley garbage too.

Tell me when it's been an "even playing field" here for our staff to recruit. If the field's ever been uneven anywhere over the last 3 years it's been here with this witch hunt hanging over the program.

Wasn't Palermo the one who basically told Shannon he was going to coach the way he wanted to coach? I'm not surprised Shannon didn't want him, since they clashed. I don't think he was much of a recruiter either, but his DL's were good.

I think Al should have kept Petri... In 2010 our lines had a lot of sacks and tfl's as well... We had like 3 players with at least 6 sacks...

Not to split hairs, Franchise, but Fairley was a JUCO guy. He was a one and done stud at Auburn. But I get your point.

But it sounds like you are a fan of Jethro. So ill say this.. ALL the other coaches are recruiting under the SAME conditions as Jethro. Paul Williams is KILLING IT with these secondary recruits. Art is KILLING IT. Barrow is KILLIN IT. Hurlie is KILLIN IT. **** Brennan Carroll is doing his thing! They are getting much needed top shelf talent at these positions under the same sanctions. Lets face it. Buddy aint a good recruiter and thats a problem cuz he is going toe to toe with Odell Haggins and Muschamp and is gettin his a$$ kicked. Like I said, im not ready to fire the guy. But "ball dont lie" as Rasheed Wallace famously said.
