17th in scoring to 82nd
63rd in yards/play to 111th

So what caused just a drastic drop-off?

The coaches are the constant.

The variables:

Schedule -- I'd say slightly more difficult, but that wouldn't cause such a huge variance.
Talent -- We lost several contributors (Spence, Regis, Ojomo, Vernon, Andrew Smith, Marcus Robinson, Nicholas, Ray Ray)

That's A LOT of talent to replace when your depth chart was FUBAR'd due to the abysmal 2009 and 2010 recruiting classes. I know, I know, I'm making excuses. But seriously, what else would account for such a significant decline?

Our problem is talent, snitches.

Facts have turned into "excuses" for people who don't like dealing with reality.

Shouldn't we show improvement frm game 1 to now?

Is our talent really = 111 in the FBS?

We did show improvement up until today.

And I don't think it is unreasonable to say not having Johnson, Bush and Perryman hurt us.

We have shown incremental improvement.

UNC only scored 18, VTech only scored 12, and we held tough with FSU for most of the game before we finally cracked.

Our margin for error is already slim on defense. We can't afford to lose our three best players.

Our defensive statistics this year are unacceptable, but that doesn't mean you can't look at different variables.

Lose Sean Spence, best defensive player, 4 year starter, quarterback of the defense
Lose Vernon, starting DE, now in the NFL and doing well as a rookie
Lose Ojomo. Didn't play a lot but solid DE/DL
Lose Regis, 3-4 year contributor
Lose Forston, 3 year contributor
Lose Smith, 3-4 year contributor
Lose Robinson, 3-4 year contributor
Lose Armstrong, 3 year starter
Lose Nicholas, starter, 2-3 year contributor

Perryman, best player, QB of the defense this year, misses 4-4.5 games
Bush, playing the best in the secondary, misses 1 game, and most of another
Paul, LB depth, misses a game
Gaines, starter, misses a game
Porter, guy who many on here see as the best DL, misses 8 games
VT, 3 year starter, depth, misses 3-4 games

We shouldn't be #119, but based on that above, we also shouldn't expect a lot (yes, more than this, but not a lot).

I think a big problem on the D is the fundamentals. It's sickening to watch this team lose contain over and over again.

I'm sick of seeing LBs cover WR, which is scheme and on the coaches. I'm sick of seeing LBs and DEs get juked out of their jockstraps by RBs, which is on the players. And I'm sick of seeing DT carried by small RB for 2-3 yards, which is on the strength and conditioning.

Tis the truth. No excuse for the final drive, but for the game, yes, we were short handed. Without a doubt. Anyone that doesn't see that doesn't realize the talent bush, perryman and Johnson are. 3 frosh, but our 3 best players.

My beef as well is they never seem to be set with the personnel on D.We have no depth yet on D, especially quality depth ( I mean c'mon guys we are cryin that our best 3 defenders were out yesterday and they are a true Fr, a redshirt Fr and a So. That alone should answer most of the why. We are lucky to be at .500 we could just as easily be a two win team right now given all the circumstances. That said Onofrio better show me something by next year. I know his options are EXTREMELY limited this year but these guys will be physically and hopefully mentally ready by next year. 7-5 is where I expected to be this year but it still hurts watching us lose winnable games ie..unc and yesterday

Aside from roster turnover, which happens in college frequently and shouldn't be an excuse, many of Dorito's calls and overall philosophies are horrendous. We should be much better on defense and this is just painful to watch.

Another thing that gets glossed over, if the talent on defense is awful, Golden is failing at his job.

we're a lot better than we were game 1.

Go watch game 1, and go watch the VT game where we were at full strength. If you can't see the difference, then may Jesus have mercy on your soul.

One full recruiting class can't turn around a program in its 1st year. You have to give it time, especially when what we had before is sub par to begin with. Our best players on the D and O are true freshmen or sophomores, no other top ten program has this problem.

Still no reason to loose to UVA, we gotta find a way to win that game.

I'm sick of seeing our defense scrambling to get set as the other team is snapping the ball.

We did it all the time under Shannon too. It's amazing how people forget that so quickly. Under Shannon the offense was scrambling too to be fair.

I bet you thought Butch was failing in his job in 1997 and 1998 when our defenses were G-d awful with all these untalented freshman and sophomores like Morgan and Myers and Lewis and Reed getting burned and run over all over the field.
