Since the season is over I watch a lot of old games. I watched a few games from Goldens first season and this week I watched the UF game... I love watching that game.

Here is what totally confuses me about the D... When Golden took over in his first year the D was not that bad. For most of the season they were number 2 in the country in TFL's... I don't remember many games where they just absolutely got gashed like this year and last year. WTF changed. I am one of those guys who feels the talent level on D is not good. But overall the D should not be getting gashed like this. What changed....how can it go from pretty good to really bad??

Second I watched the UF game and even thought there were a lot of yards put up Miami totally stopped the run that game agains a good OLINE. They also put a ton of pressure on Driskel. I remember thinking after that game that Offenses would have issues passing due to lack of time for the QB to throw. Boy was I way off. AGAIN, WTF happen to the D?? Where did they go. I know 500 plus yards were put up by UF but the offense did not help out any for 3 quarters they did nothing. Lots of 3 and outs but they totally stuffed the run vs. UF. after that game I did not see that type of D again all year.

I hold out hope that some how Golden and D'orito will be able to put something together. When I look at these two examples I see some hope... just a little.

Personal opinion is player development. I thought Shannon sucked at player development, but his players were pretty solid in the end, they just had a bad coach. As far as this year is concerned, we did not play a team that had a pulse in the pass game until game 6 (UNC). That's when the wheels fell off. It's easy to gameplan when you just stack the box because the other team is not a serious passing threat, but then when you have to cover both, it's much harder.

To tell you the truth, I didn't think the defense looked all that great in year one either.

The difference was we were able to hold teams out of the endzone more so than the past 2 seasons.

Opposing teams still marched up and down the field on us at will. We ended up losing to 2-10 Maryland and 4-8 BC that season to name a few.

I remember Charleston Southern moving up and down the field on us as well in years one and two. SMFH

Talent level is definitely down but the problem is our staff does not scheme to fit the teams strengths.

Al Golden is a stubborn man IMHO and is unwilling to change his scheme. That's no bueno mane.

Bend but don't break defense is just not suited for our kids IMO. The past 3 seasons are proof of that.

Maryland ran the same 4 plays over and over and we couldn't stop it... That was the sign of things to come.

I re watched a couple of games also but this time with a view toward observing the defense closely. My take was that for the most part players were where they were should be. The problem was the d-line were being manhandled and the LB's with the exception of Perryman were too slow. We talk about wrong angles. In many cases the angle of pursuit was fine at the beginning but the player was too slow to close. In Golden's first year the athletes were experienced and maybe a little more talented.

People who say it's the same defense don't know what they're talking about. Season 1 was 95% 4-3 with under and over fronts. The last 2 years have been much more 3-4 alignments. The problem is we were running it with guys like Shayon Green and Thurston Armbrister at OLB.

I think a hybrid D with the right personnel can be good. Having guys like AQM, McCord, Figs at OLB will give the D much better athletes. I think Kirby will have a big off-season and be much better than Gaines, and Perryman back is huge. On DL Wyche, Herteulou, Moten, Jenkins and hopefully Valentine will actually be an upgrade over Porter, Renfrew and Robinson. I also think that Chad Thomas will make an impact on defense as well.

I am training guys for the NFL Combine and one of the guys is an ACC QB and I asked him about the Canes. He said that our secondary has good athletes, but we try and be too complex and the players make mistakes. He said we would be better if we lined up and played more man.

The secondary is full of upperclassmen. No more excuses. And I think that our safeties will be better with Carter and Hester taking Highsmith and Rodgers.

There needs to be a more agressive approach, and it seems like the coaches are selling that to the players.

Really what coaches and what players? Sure haven't seen a scheme change to indicate that.

amazed. Even drunk I didn't understand why I was reading this post.

If you watch San Franciso play it's pretty much the same defense.
I've heard guys talk about Shayon Green covering WR and I believe it , I usually just try and enjoy the game, but when i was watching the 49ers, Aldon Smith played that role. Tyriq McCord will be playing that role. Justin Smith is that guy that makes that defense work, their two LBs, Navaroo Bowman and Willis look like monsters cause they get it.
This is an NFL defense the current coaching staff is trying to run, maybe that's the problem, it's like running a college offense in high school. Just too advanced for the kids, I don't know, maybe, just a thought.
Not for or against the coaching staff I just want The U to win.

What happen to our D was teams started having film to watch and prepare for what they were going to see.....something UF didnt have. As you remember it was the 2nd game of the season after FAU. Thats what happen to our D. And at no point under Golden were we 2nd in tfls. You are confusing that with Randy last year

Not complicated. Al has had more time to install HIS defense. First year he stuck a little more with old defense. As he has implimented his defense and coached the aggressive, free lancing out of the players, week by week, we could begin to see the difference. Al's defense stinks and the other teams have figured that out. In the case of the swamp scum, they had an even worst OC than our DC. Hoepfully, the increase in talent level coming with this class, expecially on the dline, we overwhelm the basic weakness of Al's defense and crush opponents' offenses anyway. If not, then pray after me: "Kyrie eleison, Kyrie eleison ....." Or for those not fluent in Greek "Lord have mercy, ....."

The same great OLine that were blocking each other ten yards down field, against the little sisters of the poor.

Pretty simple. First year under Golden our DL was better than it has been since. Ojomo was a better DL than anyone that has played since. We also had Fortson part of the year, Porter, Regis and Andrew Smith. None exceptional but overall much better than what we fielded the last year or so. Then look at linebackers. First, we had Spence who was a leader and absolute playmaker. He was surrounded by Buchannon and Futch, both of whom I'd take over Gaines and Cornelius. Perryman was a true freshman and didn't play that much. Overall our front 7 was quite a bit more talented that year than it has been since. If this recruiting class holds together and closes strong that will not be so in the next few years.

Well first off I don't think our defense was very good in year 1...maybe they didn't "seem" as bad as they do now, but if I'm not mistaken we were ranked worse at the end of that season than we were at the end of this season...

Assuming we were "better" in year 1 though, what I think happened is that we never change our scheme and teams just figure out how to play us and how to adjust. Our defense was OK through the beginning part of this season (even though we played AWFUL teams), but after 5 or 6 games these other teams - and their better coaches - have so much film to watch on us that they know exactly how to game-plan...and we never adjust or do anything differently so the longer the season goes on the more other teams started to realize what works against us. All in all, our coaches suck pretty much.

The need to choose between one-gapping and two-gapping arises, according to Dungy, “because of simple math: You have eight gaps to fill and you only have seven front players.” A one-gap technique is much like it sounds: Each defender is responsible for attacking and controlling his assigned gap. By contrast, a two-gapping defender is responsible for the gaps on either side of the lineman across from him. How? He controls both gaps by controlling the blocker in between. A one-gapper attacks gaps, while a two-gapper attacks people.

Carroll, like Dungy, prefers not to two-gap. The problem isn’t the theory — a potential two-for-one where a single defender can clog up two running lanes is a great deal for the defense — but rather that two-gapping too often results in hesitant defensive linemen who try to read and react and thus fail to disrupt the offense.

“When you put a defensive lineman in a gap and tell him he has to control the gap, he can play very aggressively,” Carroll said at a coaching clinic.

wasnt UF supposed to have a really bad OL this year going into the season. aren't the injuries to their OL the reason why Muschamp didnt have a spring game but a spring practice instead

I'm not sure all I remember prior to the game is hearing how they were going to run the ball down Miami's throats and in the game the week before the running back lit up whatever team they were playing. And either way the way they played the run Vs. UF was light years better than any other team they played the rest of the year.
