One of my favorite current Canes: Jermaine Grace

He and chad Thomas are defensively the most gifted athletes we've had here in a minute

Artie Burns would probably like to be included. This defense needs 2 NTs or a scheme that doesn't depend on a NT.

This defense needs to turn the NT loose. Imo, it is the missing ingredient. All great defenses have one common denominator, and it is being active on the interior. We have the pieced to be smothering defensively. We have speedy edge rushers, a hammer at middle linebacker to stuff the run, and athletes everywhere in the secondary.

I remember watching Grace in one of those all star games I said this kid knows how to look up receivers in zone coverage. I will pay close attention to his play this year to see if thayvtrait is still there. If it is he and Perryman should be to to choke off those inside passing lanes.

Man, the possibilities on defense are endless if we could get more active on the interior d-line, while featuring Perryman down hill from the mike spot.

It was talked about in that thread I linked. Grace got proper LB depth and I freaked out. I haven't seen one of our LBs do that consistently since, ****, I don't know.

As for the more active interior, I just don't think that's going to happen. Our best bet is to hope and pray that Heurtolou is stout enough and Wyche gets his *** in decent shape. It is what it is, man.

Grace is the goods... Yearby has the vision of frank gore and kind of the same running style. Burns should move to safety.

I am not good at finding old posts...but when I went to spring practices I wrote that he was a special talent that Coach D was personally working with, ( screaming at)
when there was water breaks, Grace and Coach D and Barrow worked thru the break on technique...kid can fly, if he can understand the 3 4 we are better at the LB postion...DP cant do it by himself..we need two LBs that can play not one..since spence and Cmac were Lb together our LB play has been horrible

Grace won't win many height or bench press competitions, but he's been the most impressive athlete I've seen on our defense this year. Somewhere along the way, fans and some corches have become too enamored with size and weight and have lost track of what football is about.

I always look for players who jump off the screen at me with their football speed and explosiveness. Grace possesses that in spades along with tremendous instincts and football smarts. Watch how many balls he picks off here. Wouldn't surprise me to see him at the top of our team in picks.

Probably my favorite addition to the defense this year. His athleticism and football smarts are off the charts, and he's a tough sumbytch on top of it.

IMHO that's what makes him special. The kid hits, and he's a sure tackler. He also doesn't seem to struggle getting off blocks despite his lack of size. If he can tackle, sheds blocks, and is tough as nails, in reality his being undersized is irrelevant. If anything it's an advantage because he's quicker than most LBs. **** he's quicker than a lot of safeties we've trotted out there the last decade.

Grace reminds me of this guy:

I know. But this goes back to an earlier post you made regarding defensive foundation. If the interior foundation of your defense is not active.....ah ****, forget it...you're right...it is what it is.
