We control our own destiny. I'm tired of this argument over taking every other thread.

from Espn.

COASTAL DIVISION

North Carolina complicates things. Though ineligible for the ACC title and postseason play, North Carolina’s results and records still figure into the league’s tiebreaker computations, which first take into account overall conference record; then head-to-head competition; divisional record; and wins against the top-ranked teams in the division. Should there be a three-way tie with Miami, UNC and Georgia Tech, Miami would win.
Duke will go to the ACC championship game with a win over Georgia Tech this Saturday in Atlanta (3:30 p.m., ESPNU) and a win over Miami in Durham on Nov. 24.
Miami can clinch a berth to Charlotte with a win over Duke in Durham.
Georgia Tech needs to beat Duke on Saturday AND needs Duke to beat Miami.

Someone else contradicted this. I'm gonna trust the guy who laid out the rules over an ESPN article written by some random beat writer as a definitive source.

Now, it may be wrong, but no one has contradicted the rules shown and interpreted by the previous poster.

Here is the complete breakdown: http://canesinsight.co/showthread.php?38049-How-do-we-lose-a-3-way-tie-w-GT-amp-UNC

Miami04, please address this or edit your thread. We don't want to mislead people.

Here are just two things that can happen that could give us control of our own destiny:

VA beats NC (tonight)
VT beats VA

See the link above. Add to that I watched a breakdown of it the other night on tv. Duke is the game.

Thanks. Sounds like a complete cluster**** of rules for the 3-way tiebreaker.

This is beyond ridiculous at this point.

All the more reason to just self-impose if we win another game. This is a total joke at this point.

I will now enter fuul ****** breakdown mode.

COASTAL CONF OVERALL
Miami (FL) 4-3 5-5
Georgia Tech 4-3 5-5
Duke 3-3 6-4
North Carolina 3-3 6-4
Virginia 2-4 4-6
Virginia Tech 2-4 4-6

These are the standings before the UVA vs UNC game is over tonight.

Say UVA wins tonight. There is no longer a 3-way tie with UNC-GT-UM. Therefore if we beat Duke we are in no matter what happens with Duke vs GT. Because we hold to tie breaker with GT.

Say UNC wins tonight. GT-UNC-UM are 4-3. If Duke beats GT then GT is out and there is no longer a 3 way tie senerio. We advance with a win over (4-3) Duke.

Say UNC wins tonight. GT-UNC-UM are 4-3. AT THIS POINT UVA IS ELIMINATED FROM FINISHING 4th. If GT beats Duke then Duke loses to UM you have a 3-way tie with GT-UM-UNC. BUT the 4th place team will be Duke or VT. Therefore Miami advances.

Hope this helps. copy and paste around the world. Miami beats Duke we will be in Charlotte and I will see you there.

"We have decided to self impose a post season ban this year".

"Al, why?"

"Potato."

You think Golden has any idea what needs to happen for us to win the coastal?

Seems like you are forgetting the fact that UVA plays VT. If UVA wins that game, UVA can move into a tie for 4th.

Best thing for us would be to beat USF and then lose to Duke-then no decision but to take a bowl ban.

It would be unfair to UM fans to be forced to watch their team get run over by some other 6-6 team in a lowly bowl game.

Take the ban and regroup.

Best thing for us is to win out, get the ACC Coastal title, and then self impose. It would be a much bigger sacrifice to the NCAA to give up the ACCCG and a shot at a BCS bowl game than giving up some random, no-name bowl

Not only would giving up the ACC championship game be a bigger sacrifice, but considering the timing, it would be a bigger sacrifice as well. If we win tomorrow, but wait until after (potentially) losing to Duke the next week to announce we are not going, it will not look like nearly as big a sacrifice. Then again, I don't know the rules about doing something like this, but maybe Miami could tell the NCAA behind closed doors that we are going to impose a ban after the Duke game regardless of the outcome, but don't want to ruin that game for the seniors as well. Not sure if that is an option, but it if were, that's what I would do.

They would be in a tie with Duke and Duke won the head to head so Duke finishes 4th.

I'm not sure why people argue with this. Oh well it probably doesn't matter any way.

So what if Duke gets the tie breaker, both GT and Miami would have beaten them. So it would go to #5 (UVA) next, which GT beat and Miami did not. Not sure what people dont understand about this?

Of course the issue becomes moot if VT beats UVA, Duke beats GT, or Maryland beats UNC, but as of now, we do not entirely control our own destiny

What I beleive you are missing is with Duke #4 that woudl break the 3 way tie (UNC, GT, UM) by dropping UNC who lost to Duke. Then I beleive the process starts over to break the 2 way tie, and UM wins based on head to head record.

I havent heard anything about the process starting over. Seems to me that if UNC gets dropped, they would just continue on to the remaining 2 teams' record against the 5th place team. Fact of the matter is that none of us really have a clue.
