On to the Transfer Portal....

I get the way you meant it, but I actually think it did work out. Does this mean that you have to hit on every single transfer in order to be successful? No.

I am actually hopeful about transfer season and have a gut feeling that we will land someone solid and unexpected through the portal this offseason.

Only kids who proved his worth was Osborn and Hedley. The rest had minimal impact (Bolden) or none at all (Kennedy, Martin, Tate). With the amount of chest bumping that was going on last off-season about the portal I just don't see it.

True... you need to hit on 1 or 2 Oline, an LB and a kicker. This is reasonable expectation. Need a 2 year bridge on Oline - till next class or next staff.

We're batting less than .500 in the portal, so let's not get too excited.

Signed a QB we didn't play. Signed an OT we couldn't play. Signed a DT that barely played. Signed a RB that didn't want to play.

KJ was solid. Hill was good at times. Bolden is really good in limited snaps - hope that kid returns healthy. Excited to see what Phillips can bring next year.

Early on I was pumped early with how this team handled the portal. The Kennedy and Martin transfers were Richt, not Manny so maybe we can cut him slack there. But when you add up the rest of it, they overhyped what actually happened.

Miami got some 1 year rentals that got them to 6-6. Osborn and Hedley were huge in 2019, Hill, Bolden, and Nnoruka were contributors.
Bolden and Hedley will be with the 2020 team and contribute. Phillips who knows. Martell, Kennedy, Martin just wasted initial counters. It was hardly the transformative influx of talent I thought it would be.

All very valid BUT.... we have no choice! We must have 1 - 2 OLINE that will play. Add a kicker too

Forgot about Hill but even he was just decent and then bolted as soon as he could. I will say he probably didn't get enough snaps this year.
My point is, that's a minimum of 3 players from the portal who really contributed and I think that number will increase depending on what happens with Jaelan Phillips, Tate and some others.

I like the portal. It's our friend.

I agree on a kicker. Grabbing grad transfer kickers who are proven is great way to have insurance and competition. I like it for quarterbacks too - tons of talented quarterbacks won't wait around. On the offensive line I think the team needs competition at tackle and I am not sure where they find that.

For offensive linemen I think we all overrate the potential of the portal. Miami chased Parker Braun and lost, outside of him and ****inson from FSU I didn't hear of any major talents in the portal. The only real options in that area are guys who started, got hurt, and lost their spot, or grad transfers who were starters. Taking a backup from Tennesee who was a 4 or 5 star years ago doesn't change anything.

For every transfer portal offensive linemen they should be bringing in an athletic big body and trying to develop. Long term development of players is the fix, not short term fixes every season. Kennedy for all his starting experience never cracked the 2nd team and was with the team for 1 season and wasted an initial counter. That counter could have went to some unheralded 3 star who might actually develop (with coaching and training) into something 2-3 years from when he signed.

I agree on OL. Top flight OL are too important so they aren't in the portal. NFL is the only place they are leaving their current team for.

Here we go with stupid hyperbole.
we return 7 olineman deep. All 5 starters. They will improve. Get one who we know can start. Don’t NEED a lb or cb. But take a top one who can start. Huff and brooks and McCloud, Jennings, Joyner, steed. Striker.
Cb. All back and young guys like Williams and couch will take a step forward.
we won’t be near the 85 so in reality it doesn’t matter who we take. Would rather take guys who have a few years left.
