Offensive Line is a Weakness

View as article
Cool. But welcome to the world of college football coaching where the head coach will take the blame for EVERYTHING
I still don't like Manny's decision to start campbell, he gets roasted, doubles down on him, then pulls him.
And now he will have a decision at left tackle after Zion's performance.

Either way Manny will need to get involved on that side of the ball because there are glaring deficiencies at the moment in its efficacy.

I chalk up Manny doubling down on Campbell as pure gamesmanship. He had clearly already made the move to Scaife but didn't want to announce it prior to the game.

As always, I thank you for sharing your deep/intellectual and thoughtful analysis.

Clearly, Manny Diaz SHOULD BE FIRED for not going into a local laboratory to create 5 to 6 great offensive linemen.

And the same goes for Enos and Barry as they have failed us all by not creating Monster's of the Midway offensive linemen out of Play Dough...AND MUST BE FIRED!!!

Keep up the great work!
No but Enos and Barry should be fired for the game planning/play calls and there decisions to start and leave freshman on an island at both tackles with no help! Yea absolutely they should be fired for that and further more if we had a real admin Diaz should also be held accountable since he’s the HC and he’s the one letting Enos and Barry run the offense like we have Bamas oline. Aside from that take your old *** and go for a long walk off a short pier and take Diaz and Blake with you thank you very much. Lol

I didn't make an argument. I said I am not impressed that after 4 games (one in which Miami averaged 1.5 yards a rush vs. a central Michigan team and gave up 4 sacks) are in a group of bottom feeders in the country along the offensive line. Akron, Toledo? USF? etc.

Now Searels is a big issue and the way he recruited. Agreed. He and Richt might be the biggest culprits. But my guy, Despite that, there is no reason this staff should be 126th in sacks given up or 81st in yards per rush. That is when I looked at Manny I said I am not "impressed" I am not impressed by his decision to start John Campbell and say WE WILL BE MONSTERS we are building for the future...etc etc only to change him out the next game. I honestly anticipate a change at Left Tackle too at some point. And once again those initial decisions to start them should be questioned.

So this all conjecture and blame thing, that's your narrative. I just think my narrative was this, MIAMI, the program....should not be in this position where it starts freshmen project offensive linemen.

And dig this DOUBTING Canes, one and all. The kid at LT was only RECRUITED by one program. Mighty Appalachian St. And Diaz, Eno's and Barry " flipped the kid. " So in my solo mind's eye, that is a major SERIOUS flashing warning light about the current depth in the O-line department.

You make a huge assumption that he will hire the best guys he can get. Enos strikes me as a guy who will hire guys he has worked with in the past. Just look at the staff he put together. Are you telling me there was no WR coach better out there that would want the Miami job than Stubbs lol.
I think the WR play has been good so far - Wiggins has definitely improved. He's hired guys he's comfortable with, but he also thinks they're very good.

If it fails he gets fired, he knows that.

They do nothing to ameliorate the problems. That’s why they catch ****.

That's the right criticism though which was my point in this thread. Blaming them for the personnel they have isn't a valid criticism because they didn't pick these guys...Zion and Clark playing proves the point about lack of quality

Richt was coaching at a high school level offense. I did say that the offensive line would have advantage away from his system. And that is true.

Enos much more multiple (Albeit this is a pro style offense don't let anyone fool you) and does not have the maddening predictability that Richt had. But the offensive linemen losing one on ones is not a system based thing a lot of times. The victimized by blitzes early was which has died down a bit the last two weeks was. But I will admit I thought they would play much better as a unit. And that is not exactly the case up until now.
Whatever happened to his 'Fast Break' offence?

And you know what’s happening behind closed doors Mr insider. Well please
Do share and enlighten us all with what you know is happening besides and bunch of JV coaches and grad assistants all looking at each other with a deer in headlights look while simultaneously blaming the players for everything. Get real dude!

Yeah. It's more of an indictment on CORCH Eno's BLAMING a young inexperienced QB after the narrow lost to a staunch Florida defense. When maybe he should have blamed the kid behind close doors. Instead of a press conference.

Try to be accurate. Zion Nelson was recruited by and committed to Searels and Richt.

It is unbelievable that Campbell is still the first OT off the bench. Herbert and Hillery must really not have a sliver of talent. George Brown, Tommy Kennedy, Venzell Boulware. It's an absolute cavalcade of human sh@t coming through here since 2016 and it's finally caught up with us.

Yep he knows that. Just like a certain D coordinator who refused to change even at Houston (and got fired). But him being stubborn, doing it his way and choosing his people, and ultimately failing bc of it doesn't help the current state of affairs of the program. Some people just refuse to change and will do it their way come **** or high water regardless of the ultimate outcome.

Yeah, I was wrong again. BUT THE POINT is the kid was NOT recruited by any lower-tier Power 5 schools! dUh Let alone a MAC school or a Mountain West school. Or even a AAC school.

Repped for appropriate usage of “cavalcade”. Most CiS posters probably thought that meant Cade Weldon enlisted in first cavalry division.

A lot of reflection for me on the bye week. My inescapable haunting trigger are the two consecutive plays late in the second half vs Central Michigan where Zion Nelson got beat clean twice in a row. Then you add the first game vs. Florida where he is inexplicably stuck in his stance while the pass rush casually passes him bye like a statue.

Then there was John Campbell. His spacial awareness and feel for the position was so critically not in tune that he stuck out on film like a sore thumb. He thus graded out lower then any other Miami offensive lineman on Pro Football Focus vs UF and was replaced the following game. Two Freshmen. I get it.

A deep dive will show Miami ranks tied for 125th in the nation in sacks allowed (with only four games played) There are only five teams in the country who average over four sacks given up per contest:
  • Old Dominion 4.0
  • Tulsa 4.0
  • Miami 4.5
  • Akron 4.6
  • USF 5.0
Not necessarily the who's who in college football and Miami is the ONLY P5 team on the list. Conversely for reference I listed the top 3 ACC schools in protecting the quarterback and it may be a surprise for some. You would figure the defending national champ would be on the list (they are) but two teams you are killing in recruiting are doing a fine job keeping their QB upright. (Duke by the way started off the year facing Alabama)

  • Duke .25
  • Boston College .6
  • Clemson .8
Sacks allowed isn't the only metric that defines offensive line greatness but when you consider Miami is 82nd in the country in yards per rush, the offensive line is not the strength of this team. Not even close. It is not even average. But why?

So many aspects that are hard to digest but ultimately the coaching staff needs to take a little heat here for their decisions along the line thus far. Say what you will, but announcing Campbell would remain a starter after a porous week zero and wrapping it up in a bravado cape of "We are building a monster" was inexplicably tone deaf. You supplanted him the very next week and the only thing that was monstrous was the claim.

You sold the collective fan base on this year's starting left tackle being a Butler transfer that the Oklahoma Sooners wanted in Tommy Kennedy. I honestly don't think I have even seen an episode of MTV's Catfish that was this outlandish because Kennedy can't even crack the three deep at center.

Continue the miss parade as Cleveland Reed, who was once applauded by former head coach Mark Richt as a starter of the future, left the program. Currently my numbers show Miami with 74 scholarship players. 11 below the 85 scholarship mark. I have to ask though, are these sanctions self imposed? I just don't get it.

This program needs to get a sense of itself because the statement "Zion is the best we have out there" should not be true. Four games in he is playing like a true freshman who needs a couple more years in this system before he makes any kind of steadfast impact. Which is fine because I believe in his ability long term. But after last week I don't see how this staff continues to march him out there. They shouldn't be in the position that they needed him to be.

That is the reality this current coaching staff faces. You knew what you had on the roster. You tried to fix it in the transfer market and you got catfished. You let some young develop-able talent walk off under the often default guise of "We only want guys who want to be Hurricanes." This mind you is after the countless sales jobs you employ in promising kids a chance at early playing time. You are 11 under the scholarship cap and lastly, you continue to march those kids out there.

This doesn't matter what offensive system you run this time. We cannot just chip and block with tight ends or spread them out of this mess. Eventually you need to put offensive linemen on an island and expect them to do their job. An offensive system change is just masking the more systemic issue that is deep rooted in the program less visible.

This offensive line is playing like a program who is dependent on freshman. And they have proven with 33% of the season now behind us, that is exactly what they are. Manny Diaz, I am not impressed. Butch Barry, I am not impressed. Yeah as a fan I expect better roster management and a team over a 50% blue chip ratio to be much more competitive. Especially along the offensive line.

You have points but you lost me .
1. Manny took a chance on Kennedy because he was though to be legit and UM was not the only team who wanted him.
2. You put blame on the staff for letting Reed leave when he took it upon himself to get in his feelings and leave. You cant force anyone to stay it's their choice.
3. I cant blame Barry he's 4 games in the season with a 1st time left tackle, right guard. Both 1st time playing their current position. The oline is a huge liability and it shows.

4. Do you really want the coaching staff showing zero faith in Reed and Nelson after week one? You want to destroy their confidence when your depending on them?

We have one junior and zero seniors in our two-deep OL. I have never seen a younger depth chart at that position, which is all about age and continuity.

Young players don’t always get better. Sometimes they are just bad. Same thing with coaches. But it is too early for any judgments. Let’s see how they improve.

While most of the complaints are valid they don't help the OL problems. While i Don't know much about o-line coaching it seems we may need to start using cut blocks to at least slow down the rush. Even FSU with there o- line problems learned how to cut block this week and it slowed down the rush. Don't like this type of block but its easy, effective and makes the d-line nervous.

Give anybody a shot. Move scaife to LT and have the guys compete for RT. Or give other guys a shot at LT.
That's what I'm saying. Scaife was serviceable last year at LT. He's a better option than Zion. I'm not sold of Clark either.

Really? brilliant logic. experience counts does it not?

1. That's why I called it a catfish. Because Kennedy is not even remotely an option moving forward.

2. A kid that wants to leave can leave. But at what point year after year when multiple kids leave and you fall to 74 on scholarship is it concerning? Change approach? Recruit it different? Set realistic expectations? Let offensive linemen it might be 3 years to start here? Idk... letting 50% of the 2016 class walk out the door is too high for me.

3. I'm disappointed in the offensive line play up to now ranking so low. Barry is part of it not all of it.

4. After week zero Campbell was pulled. After watching film you knew why. After last week and week zero Zion film is not pretty. Film doesn't lie. These kids need to take it as motivation
